I'm an or kinda guy, bcz in logical terms or includes the possibility of and, but and is exclusively and.

Aimless, Friday, 1 March 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)

as a professional copy editor 'and/or' is one of the banes of my existence.

I'm of the "but not" persuasion

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 1 March 2013 23:03 (twelve years ago)

"my conjunction conflict is not between and and or but between and and but"

but=or, isn't it?

nostormo, Friday, 1 March 2013 23:13 (twelve years ago)

Clauses joined with or are alternatives to one another, while clauses joined with but are both asserted. So but acts more like and than or.

the structure of the poll demands a performative contradiction from we 'and' people. :/

What is to come? What does the future hold? I don’t know, I have no idea. When from a fixed point a spider plunges down as is its nature, it sees always before it an empty space in which it cannot find a footing however much it flounders. That is how it is with me: always an empty space before me, what drives me on is a result that lies behind me. This life is back-to-front and terrible, unendurable.

A rhizome has no beginning or end; it is always in the middle, between
things, interbeing, intermezzo. The tree is filiation, but the rhizome is alliance,
uniquely alliance. The tree imposes the verb "to be," but the fabric of
the rhizome is the conjunction, "and. . . and.. . and. . ." This conjunction
carries enough force to shake and uproot the verb "to be."

"And" has an especially important role in English literature, as a function not only of
the Old Testament but also of the "minorities" at work on the language: one case in point is J.
M. Synge (see Francois Regnault's remarks on coordination in Anglo-Irish in the French
translation of Playboy of the Western World, Baladin du monde occidental [Paris:
Biblio-theque du Graphe]). It should not be thought adequate to analyze the "and" as a
conjunction; rather, "and" is a special form of every possible conjunction and brings into play a
logic of language. Jean Wahl's works contain profound reflections on this sense of "and," on
the way it challenges the primacy of the verb "to be."

What characterizes the nondenumerable is neither the set nor its elements; rather, it is the connection, the "and" produced between elements, between sets, and which belongs to neither, which eludes them and constitutes a line of flight.

Or is the discerning choice

i don't have to be fair, i'm *right* (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 March 2013 15:00 (twelve years ago)

choosy people choose NOT

Aimless, Thursday, 7 March 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

recently i have been into using "and" in sentences where you might normally have used "but", e.g.

"i'm not sure i actually like her and she's trying really hard"
"it's the middle of winter and i really want ice cream"
"i should go, and i don't want to"

bcz i feel like it adds more positivity to life.
