i've donated for years now and not once received my complimentary ILX themed t-shirt in the mail

we should interrupt popular threads and be like "we know u get a lot of value out of New Post-Fahey Folk For PPL that post in the Takoma & Tompkin's Square Threads, why don't you support that valuable work w/ a donation? w/ the sequester we expect government funds to be a lot lower than normal this year. if you call in now you'll receive this complimentary Takoma & Tompkins' Square CD set. 3 CDs of great music. we hate interrupting threads to ask for donations, but we need your support."

Given $800 is all that is needed it doesn't seem worth the effort to look for other hosting. Amazon is very reliable. 98 active users right now so less than 10 bucks a pop is you just instituted a poll tax for those logged on right now.

I'd be for putting a flat rate donation of $5 to let a wide range of people contribute. I'm sure we'd still get a little surplus to deal with any shortfall from the ad revenue. Keep it simple.

Been illin for the past few days so haven't had a chance to set anything up. Will do it this week, all being well.

Ed: You're right about Amazon, but it is expensive if you're just using it as a VPS, as we are. What I'd really like is for the ads to pay for everything. It looks like if we get a server somewhere like the macminicolo (also $800 to start with), the ads should pay for the hosting bill there + EC2/S3 for hot backups in perpetuity. No more fundraising is a big plus, I think. Assuming the hardware doesn't break straight off the bat.

The service I used for the last few years -- ChipIn -- has shut down, unfortunately. Been looking around for a while, and it seems like IndieGoGo is the best (Kickstarter requires an actual product, not just continued zings), so I've started a campaign there.

The goal is £1000 ($1550 at current shitty rates), which is enough for the server and five months of hosting. I'm hoping that this will be the last year we do this, if ads keep on as they are. But let's see!
