No tap dancing without clog dancing?

apparently not: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tap_dance#History

Tap dance has roots in African American dancing such as the Juba Dance, English Lancashire Clog dancing,[1] and probably most notably Irish stepdancing. It is believed to have begun in the mid-1800s during the rise of minstrel shows. White performers would imitate Southern blacks and satirize their dance forms while incorporating step-dancing. In later minstrel shows, black performers in blackface would play roles in which they imitated the Irish imitation of black dance forms, further mixing the two. Famous as Master Juba, William Henry Lane became one of the few black performers to join an otherwise white minstrel troupe, and is widely considered to be the most famous forebear of tap dance.

I didn't know they did this in the US

I hadn't heard of it until the Riverdance boom, when my wife was basically all "this is cool and everything but it's just clogging where ppl don't move their arms" and then I found out about her secret clogging past

Ouch

ARGH.

Anyway it will surprise no one that I adore clogging and its Appalachian variant, flat-footing. If I could get videos to embed AT ALL I would post my favorite flat-footing vids for you.

xp: L, it's the URL format; in order to embed, the beginning of the URL has to look like this (without spaces)

http: //www.youtube.com/watch? v=[youtube video id]

Thank you, but where do I find the video "id"? Neither the url of the page nor the "Share" tab offer anything in that format...?

I took a clogging class for like a second, a couple of years ago. I'm handicapped because you make the sounds by landing from a jump (or skip or whatever) on the beat, but highland is the opposite: you have to be at the apex of your jump in the air, on the beat so my reactions are all wrong.

The video ID is the alphanumeric string that follows the "v=" parameter in the URL; for the video you were initially trying to post, the video id is QmJj6LZogms

Oh, I finally found it. I got to the video from a fb link, I think that made the url messed up originally.

I bet this is not what Dan expected from this thread, tho! I used to be transfixed by team clogging but now it kinda puts me off--partly I think because I don't really like the dance when it's separated from the traditional music. I like the loose-limbed extemporaneous style with fiddle and banjo and stuff.

Allardyce for team clogging

Dust To Digital put out a great film about Thomas Maupin called Let Your Feet Do The Talkin'. It's about buck dancing, which they describe as improv clogging, so belongs here I think.

x-post Outlaw Dancer, Dancing Outlaw - whatever, it's been a long day. If you haven't seen that documentary I'd recommend it. It's great.

Buck dance and flatfooting and clogging are pretty much the same thing done in different styles. It seems like they're been differentiated by young people who wanted to take them in different directions (like how team clogging is very different from the older form now), but in Talking Feet, the oldest people interviewed use the terms as more or less interchangeable. So bring it on.

Ayuh. Which I returned with D Ray White, Jesco's dad, who gets a whole big section in Talking Feet too.
