"20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS."
Good god.

I can't wait to see what provocative things Randal has to say this time!

Ugh man I really hoped he actually was quitting movies after his hockey one, but I guess not.

I saw an interview with him on Carson Daly where he said he was going to quit after the hockey one, but decided he began with Clerks and wants to end on the same note. He was vague about details on it at the time (several months ago), but I guess today was the day he decided to get some shit done.

i didn't mind the Clerks cartoon - but the 2nd movie was possibly the worst thing ever.

OTM - the Clerks cartoon was actually really funny from what I remember!

The Clerks cartoon briefly tricked me into thinking I liked the first Clerks movie
never saw the second

the second episode being the "clip show" that kept flashing back to the first episode was brilliant
it definitely made me feel the first Clerks movie was better than it was. the animated show must have had different/better writers. or maybe animation is just more up Smith's alley. second Clerks movie was awful. laughed maybe once, cried through the rest. Clerks 3 may be even worse. brace yourself.

Kevin Smith needs to be stopped and all his work destroyed

Just read the synopsis for this on Wikipedia and uh….what the fuck
― frogbs, Saturday, 17 September 2022 17:15 (two years ago)
Not sure what part you're wtfing at - the movie seems in line with the bog-standard meta that Smith has made before - but reading the wiki synopsis is surely the best way to enjoy this movie

Ah, it was fine. If you liked Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, it's still the same juvenile humor + genuine heart-touching elements that surprisingly work that you'd expect from Smith.

when I saw Clerks II in the theater it really rubbed me the wrong way, idk why exactly but none of it was really funny or clever and so when things suddenly turn serious in the final 15 minutes it feels really unearned. it's too bad because I do know what Kevin Smith was trying to get at and I think that theme of trying to maintain friendships into your 30s is something that doesn't really get touched on a lot. but there's just this sort of emptiness to it all. here is Kevin Smith the ultimate comic book nerd and movie buff and when given the reigns all he can think of doing is fanservice and extremely unsubtle meta humor. which I guess might be kinda fun if not for the fact that Star Wars and everything Marvel have turned into basically the same thing. I just get this really defensive vibe from it. Zack & Miri Make a Porno was the same thing. just a bunch of dumb shit, boys being boys and joking around about their penises, then a full drawn out sequence explaining why bro time is really the most important thing in the world and why Kevin Smith is still justified in making these movies. based on the synopsis for Clerks III it seems like an even more extreme version of that. like I thought Super Troopers 2 was pretty lame, but had they killed off Farva and spent 20 minutes reminiscing about how giving him a hard time was actually the most fun they've ever had in their lives I would've actively hated it. fwiw I still live Kevin Smith though, seems like a good dude, just wish he made better movies

SHUT THE FUCK UP IT'S NIGHT TIME!
okay I liked this, waay more than II for damn sure. Wasn't ready for how it ended though, sniff.

I watched Jay and Silent Bob Reboot a few days ago. This guy could at least be funny at some points but hes completely forgotten how to do so now. Lame reaction shots to everything and it's all drenched in this corny meta humour. He strikes me as a guy who has an enormous self regard but also zero confidence that he can do anything else bar fanservice anymore.

It sucks that apparently this is all the guy can do nowadays, which is pander directly to the exact same audience he captured in the late 90s. Like half of the new movies that come out these days are pure fanservice and most of them feature the same superheroes he's still geeking out over so what he's doing isn't even novel. That said I think back to the fight he got into with Bruce Willis when making Cop Out, and how Bruce was pissed that Kevin Smith apparently just had no clue how to direct a movie whatsoever, and realize this was always his destiny. I mean his whole thing was that he was an amateur director with no idea how to write or direct, he was just one of the dorks, albeit the funniest one in the group. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that most of his stuff sucks. Guys like that generally don't get a chance in the first place.
That said I've heard a few people say this was better than expected, if it comes to streaming and I get COVID again I'll probably watch it

There's a review on Letterboxd that says "this [Clerks III] is the type of movie someone makes before they kill themselves".
