Is it? I get how the word "chemicals" has certain baggage (esp given that everything is made of chemicals), but they *are* dumping barrels of dye that come from a chemical factory into the river. I don't really see how it's misleading, except that you're arguing that it's a harmless chemical. My argument is, even if it's claimed to be "harmless", do we really know this? And is this respectful way to treat an increasingly rare natural resource? Granted, there's a lot of bad shit happening to water supplies everywhere, and maybe this is low on the totem pole, but I don't think it's a good excuse to continue doing it.

And? That does not make it a resource that we should be cavalier about. Water is a rare valuable resource. Look into it. There is a very serious freshwater crisis on the horizon, and it is not getting better, despite the fact that there is a large lake in Illinois.

Hm. Your logic escapes me. You're kind of saying that as long we don't have immediately evidence that something is bad, we should feel good about doing it. I can see how that could be a valid argument when you're making a calculated risk for a greater good, but when we're talking about dumping dye in a river, I think the better argument is that we should avoid frivolously doing shit that is capable of causing systemic damage, even in absence of evidence.

Does treatment of sewage and wastewater remove fluoride? Are you saying that all fluoride put into treated, drinkable water is either metabolized by people or removed from wastewater?

What I meant by the fact it's a huge body of water is that there is the tiniest, tiniest fraction of green food coloring in the water. Which is, to our knowledge, completely nontoxic.

How about you read up about fertilizers spread inefficiently on frozen fields, pesticides, poor use of natural watersheds as filtering agents due to the draining of wetlands, and the wholesale sewage and toxic waste that gets into the watershed, and then tackle a stupid cosmetic trick that uses the tiniest amount of food coloring later?

Dumping one human corpse into the lake, which the mob probably has done a zillion times, would put more pollutants in the lake than a few gallons of food coloring

I have heard tell of other countries copying the Americanized celebration of St. Patrick's Day, complete with liquor and beer-branded merchandise and wearing novelty sparkly green top hats. Eventually it will be the canonical version. I mean, the population of Chicago is half the population of Ireland, and it's hardly the only city with stupid merchandising.

This whole line of thought is giving me a flashback to a UK-themed bar I went to last year. It was actually more like someone had gone to a UK-themed pub in the US, and then made an "American UK-themed pub"-themed bar.

iirc I grew up a lot further south of the border than you, and people wearing orange on Paddy's day would definitely be seen to be trying to be ~smart.
