realized falling asleep on my back was causing back pain in the morning so it's side 100% of the time

iatee, Saturday, 23 March 2013 21:03 (twelve years ago)

Side, partly due to back problems, mainly because it helps me breathe better during the night and that means I wake up feeling like I've actually slept.

usually my side. if I have some breathing issues (allergies), then my stomach, or occasionally my back.

I've been trying out amber goggles after 8 pm (supposed to prevent melatonin suppression). It worked too well this week; I was zonked out well before 10.

Left side but since acquiring my first full bed years ago I now awaken on my back, which ain't good.

Right side to start, then left/right/left throughout the night, with a pillow under my top leg keeping my back straight. A good night's sleep is gauged by whether I have much memory of the turns. I used to spin like Linda Blair, trying to find a comfortable position, but the leg pillow has done a world of good. Even better has been going to the gym this year and strengthening my back and abs.

Always on my right side. Can't seem to breathe properly in any other position. Although apparently sometimes I turn my head around the wrong way in my sleep; I have no idea why I would do this uncomfortable thing.

I've been wondering if a person's preferred sleeping position has a lot to do with how they were positioned in the crib as a baby. Maybe side sleepers vs. back sleepers vs. stomach sleepers vary cyclicly with the generations, depending on what position doctors/relatives/etc. are recommending at the time.

I sleep on whichever side faces the door. Sometimes I wonder if doing this might be having some sort of physical or mental impact - eg maybe the flow of blood to the brain becomes biased to one side or another or it fucks up my posture. Apparently side sleeping isn't that good for being able to breathe well at night, but it's the only way to sleep for me.

on my side or stomach. i can't seem to fall asleep while on my back.

Jibe, Sunday, 24 March 2013 07:39 (twelve years ago)

how i'm sleeping right now: on stomach, with a pillow running under me, so that my chest and balls are both supported by the pillow, or the balls can rest on the bed (but never suspended or lifted off the bed). pillow under head, head turned to the right, and head positioned so that my left cheek is pulled back which allows full nostril opening (nose has been broken several times and my left nostril is slightly constricted but i can breath comfortably when my left cheek, right beside my nose, is pulled to the side). arms under the pillow that is under my head. a third pillow just below my knees (my left knee gets stiff if it's allowed to rest against the bed, especially if my torso is elevated. if i have to sleep somewhere less comfortable, like a floor, i will let my head rest uncomforted and put anything available, usu a jacket, under my knees and sleep on my back). also: my "korean sleeping towel," which is a dark blue hand towel (i bought it in korea but it's just a regular hand towel, and any soft towel or even a t-shirt can substitute for it) and satisfies a need to have my ears covered when i sleep and also blocks out any light in the room (laptop on bedside table, playing cbc radio overnight to drown out any dark or obsessive thoughts).

literally unable to fall asleep unless i'm on my side with an arm under the pillow. my shoulders are practically torn off at this point.

Same. In recent years I wake up with my arm completely dead from this. Can't ever sleep on my back. Occasionally do a sort of foetal position.

will any ol' pair of amber goggles do?

Supposedly anything that is a "blue blocker". I got some cheap ones that fit over my regular glasses.

i had to have an MRI bc my arms kept popping out of their sockets, i'm supposed to be doing physical therapy cause there was so much damage. it really sucks! apparently my body just got addicted to that stressful feeling of having my arm pulled. recently i've been sleeping with my other hand in between my knees (curled up) and i realized last night that it's the same pulling sensation on the same part of my arm. endorphins i guess.
