I ignored this story at first but I've been emailed this link twice in the past couple of days and it's currently the most read story on the BBC. Clearly this is one British obsession that won't die anytime soon. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973

Their definitions:

# Elite: This is the most privileged class in Great Britain who have high levels of all three capitals. Their high amount of economic capital sets them apart from everyone else.
# Established Middle Class: Members of this class have high levels of all three capitals although not as high as the Elite. They are a gregarious and culturally engaged class.
# Technical Middle Class: This is a new, small class with high economic capital but seem less culturally engaged. They have relatively few social contacts and so are less socially engaged.
# New Affluent Workers: This class has medium levels of economic capital and higher levels of cultural and social capital. They are a young and active group.
# Emergent Service Workers: This new class has low economic capital but has high levels of 'emerging' cultural capital and high social capital. This group are young and often found in urban areas.
# Traditional Working Class: This class scores low on all forms of the three capitals although they are not the poorest group. The average age of this class is older than the others.
# Precariat: This is the most deprived class of all with low levels of economic, cultural and social capital. The everyday lives of members of this class are precarious

the class group you most closely match is: New affluent workers

Ugh @ this test.

- The economic factors, particularly the earnings bands, are too wide and the boundaries poorly selected. The difference between earning £25k after tax and £50k after tax is huge.
- There's nothing in there about education at all - the sort of school you went to, whether you went to university. Much bigger differentiator than whether you go to galleries or listen to rap.
- The household income thing is a bit dodgy. If I take mine and my girlfriend's incomes together as a household, we are 'elite'. If we were to split up tomorrow, I'd suddenly be an 'emergent service worker'.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 April 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

We're about equal in our incomes by the way, neither one of us is earning radically more than the other.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 April 2013 12:36 (twelve years ago)

Saying that I listened to jazz in the context of this thing just made me feel dirty. It felt like they wanted me to admit I was a secret admirer of Ken Clarke or something. Yes I listen to jazz, but only the lefty revolutionary sort, motherfuckers.

Precariat - I'm not joking!

Well that's not so far-fetched: becoming single can seriously damage your economic health.

I did this last night and got Technical Middle Class, but I didn't notice it was earnings after tax, I used gross by mistake. Did it again just now with the correct figure and got Emergent Service Worker, but I think I probably fit more in New Affluent Workers really, in fact my graphs more closely resemble that one so I'm not sure how the categorisation works really.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 4 April 2013 12:53 (twelve years ago)

I keep seeing this thing

New Affluent Workers sounds like something out of a song by the Fall. As opposed to New Effluent Workers which is obviously the working title of the Bogshed comeback album.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:03 (twelve years ago)

I'm newly affluent, and keep getting that no matter how much I tweak my hobbies or my social circle (tried it again with ditching all my pals with good jobs and only admitting to going to gigs and watching sport). My bank balance does not display any sign of affluence, but I'm guessing average income and homeowner is going to keep me there regardless of cultural cachet.

ailsa, Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:04 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, owning a home seems to be the major differentiating factor.

Des Fusils Pour Banter (ShariVari), Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:06 (twelve years ago)

Nothing about whether or not you own a business, which is surely another major differentiating factor?

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)

That would depend on the annual turnover of the business, you've got e.g. window cleaners who own their own ladder to factor in there

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

Not knocking window cleaners btw

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Thursday, 4 April 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

That would be dangerous

Wd people ever just shut the fuck up about this dumb quiz.

Takes less than five minutes in actuality. Which probably says something about its validity as a survey.

('Emergent service worker', btw.)

emil.y, Thursday, 4 April 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

Ah ok I'll take your word for that. I think I would be an emergency services worker too fwiw; I earn £7.50/hr shifting crates of vegetables about but I watched the new ozon last night. I had a sausage roll for lunch. I am an aries. Still not gonna bother with this bs.

c21m50nm3x1c4n (wins), Thursday, 4 April 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

Have enjoyed ppl on my Facebook feed getting butthurt about the class they've been assigned tho.

c21m50nm3x1c4n (wins), Thursday, 4 April 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

judging by the categories there is a lot of narcissism of relatively small differences among the sort of people responsible for the survey while the entire working class is left undifferentiated

anything that renders class categories in other than economic terms is distractionary, bougie wish fulfillment that listening to radio 6 is a useful descrimination between them and someone sitting in their nw3 villa with a secure diversified private income who hasn't befriended a social media consultant and doesn't know what rap music is

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

Was delighted with the number of solicitors in my office who were surprised that they came out "established middle class".

calumerio, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

taking this test as an American is super lol

relentless technosexuality (DJP), Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

why would a solicitor be surprised about that?

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:15 (twelve years ago)

Perfect place for 'em surely?

Step not on a loose unforgiving stone on a pyramid to paradise (Tom D.), Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

because some of them are morons who maintain they are working class, and some are disgusting savages who think themselves part of an elite.

calumerio, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

a working class solicitor is something to be

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

I can't be bothered as a mere piece of council estate shit. Get the feeling that liking a bit of art + Mingus albums isn't going to uprate me to middle class.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 4 April 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)

Well that didn't make any sense.

is "going to stately homes" a real cultural activity?

^^^ this was an eye-opening experience which completely obliterated any lingering illusions I had about the American class system and "equality" btw; we developed our own aristocracy complete with castles and everything but because we called them "businessmen" and "mansions" it was American enough to be acceptable

relentless technosexuality (DJP), Thursday, 4 April 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

the american class system definitely exists, wish we would just come out and acknowledge it and save everyone some anxiety.

I'm an emergent service worker!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 05:18 (nine years ago)

I just tried direct conversions to GBP but didn't notice it was after tax. I gather that "service worker" doesn't mean what "service industry worker" means to me?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 05:21 (nine years ago)

Depends. Are you emergent.
