Avoid or pursue? Attempt or eschew?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never known anyone in my life who's made a habit of wearing pigtails. I don't know if I'd like them.

Incidentally PF, Sarah pointed me towards your "beard is back" Sinister slander. There is a difference between slovenly lack of shaving for a few days and The Beard. I hope.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you mean like bunches or just one pony tail (as I have heard pigtails used to describe both)? Some girls can pull off bunches (as it were) but I don't think I am little-girlie enough. A Victoria Beckham-style high pony tail rocks though especially when clubbing as it keeps long hair out of the sweat & glitter.

I don't think the Pinefox should attempt any of these looks though.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I am no expert, and was expecting that my terminology might be criticized. I think what I have in mind is single or dual pigtails.

Obviously the world's best pt is not going to make mutton into lamb or swine into bacon, but I feel that they can help make the prettier prettier still.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to be able to do two low bunches - not the type that stick out just above your ears, mind. I called it my ICE SKATING HAIRDO on the fabulous day when we went to Streatham Ice Arena and I wore white tights and I FROZE TO DEFF. However, now I have my own "home-made" hair-do complete with uneven fringe, I'm not sure if they could be pulled off sucessfully. But really, they ARE cute. Unless you look like a twat and have a SHINY FACE.

SHINY FACES!! ARGH!!

Sarah, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The high pony tail I've never liked - I like flowing locks and the hair-pulled-back-from-scalp thing is a no.

Double pigtails - too little-girly for me, like most 'cute' touches.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

High ponytail = great dominatrix look but having your hair so tightly scraped back gives you a headache.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right, just to confirm: high pony-tail: No-No.

Double pig-tails: Yes.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pinefox, you have said exactly what i was going to say. on the money.

gareth, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You men are very confusing. Last time I attempted Cutesy Schoolgirl through pairing lacey ankle socks with shoes I was cruelly mocked. And yet you all seem to go for pigtails. Something to hold on to I suppose.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely I have never mocked a Cutesy Schoolgirl look.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The shoes were not cutsey and schoolgirl though. Unlike my extremely childlike "scuff proof" style DMs which are (in a smaller form) the bane of every 5yr old child who wants to dress up in mummys heels.

Sarah, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At [one] former magazine job, I initiated the Pigtail Appreciation Page. This consisted of full-page photo of [usually blonde] model clad in wet T-shirt, holding water-pistol, & w/ pigtails (the two-bunch cutie kind). Not borne of fetish, rather THIS MAGAZINE HAS HIT ROCK BOTTOM idea-wise moment. Quite funny, tho.

AP, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is there a kosher helen-the-hairdresser name for the mymble style? (beatnik mymble = my rockin sistah)

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

True, the shoes were not schoolgirly. But I am sure that any schoolgirl worth her salt would want to wear shoes like that on the weekends.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And they WOULD wear them with lacey socks too!! As obviously they are not allowed at skool cos yous gotta have plain ones dull boo chiz. I am sure the worth of pigtails depends on how many frills there are in the bobble - and style of hairclips surrounding bunches to make it look neat.

There are numerous photos of me as a nipper with VERY MESSY BUNCHES. Let's just say my mum was better at making rice pudding than doing my hair. Cos I'm sure I wasn't THAT rowdy.

Sarah, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So do we agree that they're good?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alyson Hannigan as band camp "geek" w/ mini-pigtails = CLASSIC. Of course, I've come to realize that Alyson Hannigan in ANYTHING = CLASSIC. Ah, yes.

Go see _American Pie 2_. More Alyson, less haggard-scarecrow-drunk Tara Reid. Ah, yes.

David Raposa, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, I do not agree that they are good. I am a grown up and have left behind such childish things as pigtails.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah. Pigtails rock. You're only objecting 'cos we didn't approve of those socks.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't agree that they're good.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like them. But I am a fule who cannot face up to the fact that I might have to get a proper job. I've even been thinking about MORTGAGES (despite barely affording my current rent anyway). I got an ISA the other day. Having pigtails hides you from all of this.

An ISA, eh?

Sarah, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have an ISA and NO PIGTAILS.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's with this question anyway Pinefox? Is it a coded way of telling us you've suddenly got into Britney?

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No - though I am flattered by your interest.

I have always said that Britney Spears is, by my lights, a very beautiful and well-presented young woman. That much has never been in doubt.

I didn't know she was particularly keen on pigtails. If she is, I suppose it just proves my point.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still confused over definitions. To me, pigtails have always been plaits and bunchies come in pairs. One bunchy is a ponytail. Do you get me? Right, having made that clear, I say this:

Plaits/pigtails = quite cute when short, but you have to be That Kind of Girl. I'm not keen on plaits if they're long enough to smack you in the face when the wearer turns their head and I don't like it when they go fuzzy. Shiny, straight hair is best. And plaits on men are a NO NO. Even Rat Tail Jim.

Bunchies = generally good any length, but I was unfortunate enough to encounter a pair of long bunchies on either side of a young man's head not long ago and this = very dud indeed.

With ponytails there's a lot of scope for dudness. Scragged back harshly was a Surrey schoolgirl thing circa 1990 and was accompanied by a couple of strands of fringe hanging down, the rest of the fringe in a quiff, all held in place with a lot of wet-look mousse. Classic for comedy value, but dud really. Scragged back also reminds me of athlete Liz McColgan, who seems to be actually balding at the front of her head because her ponytail is so tight. And side ponytails are definitely dud.

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

blimey traffix busy: ignore viz interjection above

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchen's highly comprehensive answer is generally correct. However I have started doing my hair Lara Croft-style in the gym (i.e. highish ponytail which is then plaited) and it is nearly long enough to smack me in the face if I turn round quickly (not that I often move very quickly) but as a look for the gym it rocks.

Emma, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doing your hair in any style besides extremely messy half-up, half- down thing with a clip that takes two seconds to do (and looks it): completely awful. Hair should be as messy as possible.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey, that's ME!! (duh, i mean, that = ME!!)

mark s, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always thought he was Rat Tail Bob.

???

Sarah, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We haven't yet touched upon balding men with ponytails. Do I really need to give an opinion on this one?

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Note to everyone: this is the look Madchen's boyfriend 'sports'.

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have heard him called both Bob and Jim, Starry, but his url says j_rattail.

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchen: No. This is the PIGtail thread, not the ponytail-geezer thread.

Is it true that your beau 'sports'? I thought his knee was ailing.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Obviously the world's best pt is not going to make mutton into lamb or swine into bacon, but I feel that they can help make the prettier prettier still.

Oh, dear, pinefox. These metaphors are rather disturbing. What do you DO with your special lady friends, anyway?

Josh, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His knee ails when dancing takes place in barns, apparently.

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought that was an answer to Josh's question for a minute. It seemed eminently plausible.

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes.

Josh: I was only following up the large hint dropped by the urgent and key word 'PIGtails' itself.

Oldest Barns In Britain: Plausible or Codswallop?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, me aching joints, etc. I'm afraid we can't all have hair as lovely as yours, Nick.

Ally C, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always answer these questions after the answers have devolved into a place far away from the original question.

Pigtails (two of them) look very very very good on girls, I do believe. A girl I knew had a shavied head all except for Tank Girlish bangs & two pigtails. That was attractive! But my face is too chubby to get away with such a thing.

Wearing one in back (a ponytail) makes me feel like a slovenly mom.

1 1 2 3 5, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four months pass...
Pigtails are the best thing in the world. But there are two types, and people must know this: Pigtails are the type that are platted on either side of the head. The type that are just gathered together on either side of the head are called bunches. This is vitally important. I'm not sure which one I prefer the most though... I go through phases, and at the moment I'm go for bunches. Bunches on a girl with ankle socks and a nice plaid skirt is the biz. People get scared sometimes when they read someone talking like this, but please rest assured that guys and gals who are into pigtail/bunches and skirts (the schoolgirl look) are ONLY interested in ADULTS wearing this gear. There is a line that society imposes on us (the age of 16), but I personally prefer a girl to be around 20 - that way the relationship isn't just s e x ual: there's an emotional element too. Doing this kind of stuff with anyone below that age is child abuse and is totally wrong. People mustn't fear what they don't understand. They must seek out the answers. Just my 1p's worth! Please feel free to contact me if you are a lass who enjoys the whole pigtails thing. It would be nice to contact a kindred spirit!! Ta. Bye Bye!

CP, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you some kind of cultist?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pigtails eww. when i was 18 i put my hair in pigtails every day and i had piercings. ewww. pigtails remind me of a very tragic phase of my life. they are so cutesy. people who wear pigtails should be beaten to death with their own shoes.

di, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now hamish has more to fear from you di (not that I've managed to convince him to wear pigtails in public but I know it has happened before).

in favour of plaits on men all I need say is WILLIE NELSON (and maybe his also qualify to be called pigtails, because he wears them one on each side)

elizabeth anne marjorie, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi all, the only people who suit pigtails/braids hanhing down are children 6-10... The reason being the hair doesn't get tangled. other than that...Unless it's a French braid it's waisted on a woman shiney face or not but if they like them, then they should go for it like anything else. To me it makes a woman look like a bimbo.

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CP is being a bit forceful - there is no such thing as bunches here. A pony-tail is all the hair tied up at the back, pig tails are the hair tied up on either side of the head. Neither are plaited. A plait is one at the back, plaits and those on either side of the head.

I like to wear my hair in plaits, it gets it out of the way and because I used to have a fringe the hair at the front is shorted and falls out if I just have it plaited at the back. I like to have my hair in pig-tails at the nape of my neck rather than ones above my ears. If you have long hair plaits and pig tails can be very convenient.

Di, please don't beat me to death with my shoes. I'm sure my pigtails aren't that offensive.

toraneko, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lol When I wore my hair long, and I did, I wore it many different ways! (even braids... they made ME feel like a bimbo!)lol I'd even have mine up in a French roll just to get it out of my way while I worked. :)

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The difference between a ponytail & pigtails is very simply a ponytail is loose hair bound by an elastic band which you can wear as a single or double if you choose to. pigtails are braided hair, which turn up at the bottom like pigtails... The maggie Muggins look. Or Judy Garland in the Wizzard Of Oz.

Gale Deslongchamps, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the movie Titus, Jonathan Rhys Meyers had blond hair with dark roots and pigtails. It looked good on him. I follow his hairstyles closely.

Maria, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about pigs with boytails?

DG, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There weren't any boys with pigtails or pigs with boytails at Waterloo, at least I didn't see any. There were, however, approx. one gazillion girls with pigtails (and school uniform etc) because they had all been School Disco-ing.

I don't get this School Disco phenom because you DON'T wear school uniform to school discos.

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm amused by the number of people from my university who go, because some of the first years would have still been wearing it TWO MONTHS AGO.

Graham, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to wear them a lot when I was still painting to keep my hair out of my face and away from the canvas, but as a fashion thing I don't really rate them.

All depends, Nick. A previous girlfriend did the make-up and pigtails treatment on me once. I can't speak for my own appeal, but she said I looked like an extra in Toni Basil's video for "Mickey."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boys who look good without pigtails must also look good with pigtails, thus Nick is wrong.

hot-action tip #327: always do LUNCHES with boys sporting BUNCHES!!

mark s, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have only known of two boys who wore pigtails - one was the biggest hippie ever who always wore overalls and talked about how grate the Wonder Stuff are/were (this was back in early 90s), and looked ridiculous in them. The other looked like movie Legolas and liked to dress up in drag once in awhile - yum.

It just depends.

cool thread, a friend and I were just discussing today pigtails vs ponytails... I'd always considered 2 (one on each side of the head) as pigtails and one in the back as a ponytail, regardless of whether they were braided or not, but the dictionary (and several of you) say that the braided/not braided defines the style rather than the location, tho there seems to be a common misconception toward my original understanding any which way they can be a great look for the right girls or guys, at least to me :)
