The Fantastic Four - Fantastic or Flatulent?

The Thing is such a jerk. I also don't really like the Human Torch, he's so hot headed. I like Mr. Fantastic because he is stretchy, but he is always scolding the thing when he should just be firing him. And MArvel Girl is a weak, wimpy waste. I wish Doctor Doom would make them be his slaves. Every time the FF meet new being, the THing and the HUman torch immediately attack while Reed shouts "WAit! W e must study them!"

Dan Perry, Jess, David R. and Martin Skidmore to thread! For they are our Fantastic Four when it comes to those comix things.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 September 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember when She-Hulk became a member of the Fantastic Four? That was cool. OR WAS IT????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

She-Hulk = She-it.

Remember Herbie the robot, who replaced the Human Torch in the 70s animated show because the producers were worried that copycat kids might set themselves on fire?

Mr Fantastic is Neil Tennant's favourite superhero.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 27 September 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

They are the secret rulers of the world.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Spider-Man, Spider-Man - and also sometime a Reverand
His soul singing is rightly rated
His face looks like its been laminated
Look out - here comes the spider-man."

Pete (Pete), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the FF!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 27 September 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You like his stretch fun

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

MARVEL GIRL, Hanley? MARVEL GIRL? Sweet shit, man. (BTW - if you've $.09 lying around, and are curious about these sorts of things, the latest issue of the FF - #63, I believe - features a keen little story fashioned by the new creative team of Mark Waid & Mike Wieringo.) (I'll wait for Simon to poop on this thread re: Mark Waid's supposed suck factor.)

Any & all Secret Wars-related shenanigans (stupid Spidey venom costume, She-Hulk joining the FF, Thing willfully staying on Beyonder World, the new Spider-Woman!) = the moment Jim Shooter's tenure as EIC of Marvel jumped the ever-lovin' shark. John Byrne's FF run jumped soon after, about the time that silly horseshit w/ Wyatt Wingfoot (Shulkie's paramour) & Terminus happened. (Oooo - he's yellow and small, like my POOP!)

As Jess has noted, the first #100+ issues of FF (even those w/ art by John Buscema and John Romita) are stone cold CLASSICK. Also search the good part of John Byrne's run (#232-#260ish, AND the two issues w/ Joe Sinnott inking Mr. Byrne - #287-288). And, sure, Walt Simonson was OK at the helms (#337-#350ish?), even w/ that Acts of Vengeance garbage pooping over everything. DESTROY EVERYTHING ELSE.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I am foolishly fond of the George Perez/Roy Thomas issues from round abt #160 -170. Yeah, shoot me now.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 27 September 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW, does Ned's definition of the FF make Ethan HERBIE?

Clearly I'm the Invisible Woman, because I've got the best rack & the child birthin' hips.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned's definition of the ILXOR FF, that is.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Men with child-birthin' hips = CREPEY.

I got dibs on being Mr. Fantastic! Except that means that I have a child with Daver (and his hips). Uh, I think I'll be the Human Torch instead. He gets it on with the blind!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

So does the Thing!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

If they make a movie I cast Hasselhoff as Mr. Fantastic

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 27 September 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

A magnificent first 102 issues, some of the very greatest comics ever produced anywhere - meaning that there are few better buys than the Essential FFs - I'm hoping that the first five volumes will collect all the Kirby issues. The recent Grant Morrison mini-series was good too, especially Reed.

Worst issues ever? For sheer boredom and the impression that the writer and artist were square pegs without a clue how to adjust, the Moench-Sienkiewicz issues. Remember them?

The Byrne ones were astonishingly patchy - he was too powerful, so no editor was in position to say "drop this idea" or "waddaya mean you're killing Maximus off-panel?", or better still to give him a good slap when he decided Lockjaw could talk or brought in Aunt Petunia.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 September 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

there is already a fantastic four movie made, but it's been shelved.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 27 September 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

hah I have seen it Jel! It was made by Roger Corman on a budget of about 8p and is unspeakably terrible, with only slightly better special effects than we could manage (arm on a stick stuff for Mr Fantastic) and appalling acting throughout. It is bad enough to be a bit funny when watched with friends (Andrew, I believe you were in on this too?), but only just.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 September 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked She-Hulk. Then again, I just really love Peter David's run on the Hulk, so anything hulk is hulky with me (too much Twisted Toyfare Theater, indeed)

Dr.Doom is the shit.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 27 September 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it couldn't be as bad as the capitan america or punisher movies!! who was greenlighting this shit at marvel back when they were making more money than jesus?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 27 September 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

AVI ARAD.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 28 September 2002 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I think.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 28 September 2002 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the Cap movie of the 3 (FF, Cap, puny Cher). The Punisher actually looks like it was made by someone serious about it. The FF is, As Martin writes, barely entertaining with friends and alcohol.

Tim Bateman, Monday, 30 September 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

Jack Kirby's birthday today.

Everybody be sure to call your Mother Boxes and tell 'em how much you love 'em.
