I just finally saw {i]Lincoln[/i] and I know I'm a minority ilxor in my lack of enthusiasm. But it got me thinking about the run of DDL's American epics.

I love three of these -- Mohicans, GONY and Blood -- and like all of them pretty well. Obviously he's in lifelong training for a go at Ahab.

Surprised that I've seen them all. I don't think There Will Be Blood is as great as many people do, but for weirdness alone I'll go with that. For me, Gangs of New York far and away the worst.

I think The Age of Innocence and The Crucible are nearly as good as Lincoln. GONY is deeply flawed, and Blood is nearly ruined by the last 20 mins.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 7 April 2013 05:57 (twelve years ago)

The Age of Innocence, followed by Lincoln and Mohicans.

I think I'll go with Mohicans as I loved it so much when I saw it in the cinema aged 13.

Mohicans aside, we are the absolute inverse here.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Monday, 8 April 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

I admittedly haven't watched The Crucible since the late '90s, but I remember it being unfairly shat on.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Monday, 8 April 2013 01:07 (twelve years ago)

all i ever say on ilx is age of innocence is boring. age of innocence is boring. the crucible is kind of a crappy play, so yeah, the movie versh is fine.

horseshoe, Monday, 8 April 2013 01:33 (twelve years ago)

age of innocence. kind of half dug there will be blood, so that's a respectable second. don't like or haven't seen (the crucible) the rest.

buzza, Monday, 8 April 2013 04:03 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I feel I should see Lincoln before voting here, but I'm having a hard time believing I'd like it better than TWWB, or even AoI.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Monday, 8 April 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

Totally forgot there's a Crucible movie.

cougars and sneezers (Eazy), Monday, 8 April 2013 04:31 (twelve years ago)

DDL would be awesome as ahab but i suspect the rest of the film would be shitty. maybe someone could digitally insert his performance into the john huston movie.

"boring" is what some of you mean by "not Die Hard"

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 April 2013 06:24 (twelve years ago)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 8 April 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

i love edith wharton! and the davies house of mirth! and martin scorcese! age of innocence is flat to me, and has truly excellent source material.

horseshoe, Monday, 8 April 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

i also like die hard, to be fair.

horseshoe, Monday, 8 April 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

Wharton's most overlooked book.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Monday, 8 April 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

Is it? I was gonna say The Custom of the Country but DDL wasn't in that one.
