Bad Cop, Pretty Good Movie

There seemed to be a mini-genre take shape between the first and the last on this list. Not just corrupt, but evil. I consulted two online lists. I probably missed something, but certain things I eliminated because they fell outside the timeline, or were more about departmental rot than one specific cop (e.g., Copland). Daryl Gates and Mark Fuhrman lurk behind at least a couple of these, most specifically Dark Blue. Vote for the best movie--but I listed all the bad cops.

OptionVotes
Bad Lieutenant (1992) -- Harvey Keitel 7
Training Day (2001) -- Denzel Washington 6
Internal Affairs (1990) -- Richard Gere 4
Narc (2002) -- Ray Liotta 1
Dark Blue (2002) -- Kurt Russell 0

Just watched Dark Blue, which gave me the idea. I really don't remember being aware of it at the time--did it get much attention? It's got some of the clumsiness you'd expect from an ambitious movie that tries hard to be gritty, but I thought it was pretty good. I found Bad Lieutenant so over the top when I first saw it, I've never watched it a second time. Barely remember Narc. I'll probably vote for Internal Affairs.

Somewhere I read that originally Ron Shelton wanted to make Dark Blue and Light Blue, but the latter turned into...

Would it be fair to say the five I listed are the most well known? I vaguely remember the Woody Harrelson. If enough omissions are pointed out, maybe this thread could be locked and I'll redo it. Or just treat it as what it is, a meaningless diversion, and pick one of the five listed.

Narc is awful. demented Herzog remake of BL should be in here.

Simon H., Saturday, 13 April 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)

training day dvd came was a great mini-documentary on LA cops and the ramparts scandal.

Chuck E was a hero to most (s.clover), Saturday, 13 April 2013 21:52 (twelve years ago)

narc makes a lot of noise and stirs up a lot of moderately interesting visual dirt for such a nothing movie. the performances are iirc good, idk. and liotta's cop isn't evil, just misguided and kind of noble.

dark blue has one of my favorite kurt russell performances. it's a p good flickaroo

i really dug rampart for the things it did differently from the conventional dirty cop movie. like there's this part where woody goes to a club and looks to be ready to go down some requiem for a dream type drug spiral, but he just ends up having a nice time and eats an awesome burrito.

'ten' is gonna be my shit, 'john breacher' is an all time arnold character name

turds (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 13 April 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)

the recruit is kinda like this but bad CIA agent (al pacino) not bad cop

Mordy, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:02 (twelve years ago)

Seems like I should have added Ramparts for sure (haven't seen it). I know polls can't be edited.

Both lists I looked at included L.A. Confidential, which to me is a whole other thing--some good cops taking on evil higher-ups. Thought Russell was very good in Dark Blue, having just derided him in Tequila Sunrise a few days ago. Maybe a bit much at times--these roles invite over-acting, and leave little room for shading--but he pulled off the big ending well, and I liked how he quietly told his wife to take the house (I kind of sighed as that scene developed, sure that he'd start to swat her around).

clemenza, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

Sidney Lumet's Q&A is probly the one missing film that most firmly belongs in this poll. either way I'm gonna vote for Bad Lieutenant, it's over the topness is total opera.

The Korean movie I Saw The Devil is better than all of these imo.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

Dark Blue, Street Kings, Rampart is like james ellroy's cinema bad cop trilogy of the 2000s. im pretty sure he cranked them all out for a buck, but they're all interesting imo

i didnt notice until just now that daryl gates played himself in street kings!

The other Bad Lieutenant.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)

I've only seen Bad Lieutenant of these 5, and yeah the Herzog one is better.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)

Absolutely agree about Herzog's version acing Ferrara's but still not mad about either really.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:37 (twelve years ago)

Lol Training Day, what an awful movie that was. Voting for Bad Lieutenant without a doubt.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)

I still remember seeing Bad Lieutenant at the Angelika when it was brand new - didn't know anything about it, just that it was the new movie from the director of King of New York, which I'd loved. Watching it cold like that was like getting smashed across the eyes with a bat. An amazing movie. Shame they had to cut the Schoolly D songs out; the replacement music doesn't have the same impact, and the scenes where the music was featured are crucial to the movie.

This is why I talk myself out of more polls than I put up--I know I'll end up missing stuff. Q&A should definitely be there--liked it a lot when I first saw it, much less so when I went back to it years later. I care less about leaving off Herzog's film. I had a timeline in mind--Rodney King to Training Day, roughly--and the Bad Lieutenant remake falls well outside of it.

tbf clemenza i cdn't even remember the title of Q&A, just knew that Lumet had done a bad cop movie in that era and had to check what it was, i still mix it up in my head with Internal Affairs plotwise

life went on, sadly (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 13 April 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)

Same year as Internal Affairs. The thing it had going for it was Nolte's performance--that, and it felt like a return for Lumet to the familiar territory of Serpico and Prince of the City. When I watched it the second time, though, the overwrought ending (there's some awful song that plays and plays) ruined whatever was good about it.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Narc is great. I likex Training Day, too. Haters be hating.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

Voted Internal Affairs, which I haven't seen since i was 12, but which I remember being really intense (possibly because I *was* 12 and most certainly shouldn't have been watching it).

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:05 (twelve years ago)

I like Training Day. I think Ethan Hawke's role may have been the more difficult--Denzel's playing against type, and great actors really go to town with that. But a great actor he is, so he does.

clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

xp yeah i don't know how great a movie internal affairs is but i do remember it changing my (admittedly limited then) perception of gere.

sleepingsignal, Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:16 (twelve years ago)

I remember seeing it around the same time as Pretty Woman and, not having seen much of his earlier work at that point, the two films ended up defining, for me, an impression of him that was decidedly schizophrenic.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)

(also, this thread settles it. once i've turned in my final paper and i'm done grading my stack of exams late next week, i'm watching Internal Affairs again.)

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:24 (twelve years ago)

Q&A is a pretty milquetoast title for a kinda scummy feeling albeit really good movie that has nick nolte banging transvestites on the low and people getting shot in the face.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Sunday, 14 April 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)

it's kinda more in the to live and die in l.a./cruising friedkin vein than it is the usual 'prince of the city'-ish lumet policier.
