Did people say it before Kramer? Seems like it was at least partly popularized by that one ep of Seinfeld, if not originated per se

One of our vendor salesmen at my old job used to say that, a fat-necked, jowly, older man whose face was so red I always worried he was in fact having a heart attack right there. I'm not completely sure I would have called for medical assistance.

Can't you do me a solid, man?

Not till tonight when we close.

always thought of this as black slang, so kinda oddly ironic that it would be attributed to a shitty racist comedian

lol yeah I figured it predated Kramer but that was definitely where I learned it (and when he says it the other characters kind of repeat it mockingly, like it's a really obscure or antiquated phrase)

Well, it definitely takes off in popularity in the mid-1990s (at least in written English): http://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=do+me+a+solid&year_start=1950&year_end=2010&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=

The Facts on File Dictionary of American Regionalisms (2000) includes "do me a solid" in its chapter on "New Yawk Tawk":

do me a solid Do me a favor. Used by the character Kramer on the New York-inspired television comedy Seinfeld.

that makes me think of when abc or nbc had a miniseries called THE 70S like 12 years ago and in all the ads for it there was this dramatic shot of a young woman smiling and saying "Solid." in response to something like it was the most epic thing in the world. wish i could find the commercial on youtube

i say it on the semi-reg tbh

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

I say this to Jeff sometimes and he hates it.

I'd rather someone offer me a "solid" than a "flavor" any day.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

is it a southern thing?

i also dont really get how its gross at all, its kinda corny but all slang is kinda corny

Reggie (Lamp), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

As with many things on ILX, it all comes down to a poop joke.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:46 (twelve years ago)

For sure. I do say it sometimes, but only if I'm talking to my dog

four Marxes plus four Obamas plus four Bin Ladens (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

i guess outside of the gross-ness of this i'm also taken aback by using 'solid' as a noun, moreover as a countable noun

hey, buddy... you owe me a solid

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)

It's kind of always been there in the background. I don't really notice it, other than that it's a really pushy way to ask for a favor. Try "would you be so kind as to", or "could you" or "please". "Do me a solid," kind of subtly gets my hackles up.
