Was their any massive ant-marriage equality protests similar to France's?

I think around 1000 people, for and against, turned up outside parliament for the second reading of the bill, but it was v.civil. Lot more, uh, inevitable etc than France; we're two terms in to a right-wing government and our PM voted in favour of the bill.

both sides desperate to out-bigot each other despite popular opinion, so no likelihood

etc, did winston peters make nz first vote against it or did they all want to?

New Zealanders who want to marry me: line up for inspection.

Winston peters is douche of the highest order and I'm not surprised nzzzzz first voted against.

this was great news to wake up to today. I'm not a very patriotic person but damn if I don't feel like a very proud kiwi right now.

for the first time you feel proud to be a New Zealander

Guessing these guys are fascist bastards.

(Congrats, NZ, btw)

I used to work in a non smoking restaurant - winston peters, leader of nz first, would come in and smoke cigars without even asking (of choose my boss never said anything).

Wouldn't be surprised if it's the former (cult of personality etc), but TBH with the crop of MPs NZ First has (eg Richard Prosser) the latter's equally likely - NZ First surged in the polls out've nowhere last election due to, IIRC, "teagate", so it's a v.odd bunch of list MPs.
But yeah, this is a real callback to their Grey Power-pandering reactionary 90s xenophobia.

Nice to see steady movement forward on this issue across the globe. Congrats, NZ. (btw, no sheep jokes allowed on this thread or you'll be SB'ed.)

On a day when a US president had to chastise congress and we buried an old witch this spontaneous act of singing was very heartening.
