Does your local Chinese takeout place have cheesesteak egg rolls? Do you have a "regional" egg roll?"

I mean I assume this is a Philly thing but who knows, maybe you have them too! Do you have a specialty egg roll that you think might be specific to your area (i.e. any non-trad/non-pizza egg roll)

Philly Chinese food sounds like it is dreamed up in a British pizza parlor

I mean we have all the standard stuff too but we *also* have cheesesteak egg roll

hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:28 (twelve years ago)

Love your city, but I can not get behind this. This will not stand.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:30 (twelve years ago)

This comes from a dude that reps for a city where we have fights about who invented the idea of making a hamburger filled with molten death cheese, so take that as you will

The cream cheese won-ton is not something I've seen outside Minnesota. *sudden craving*

karl lagerlout (suzy), Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:34 (twelve years ago)

are you talking about something other than crab rangoon? like, crab rangoon without the crab?

jaymc, Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:37 (twelve years ago)

No crab in these, and for some reason they're a thing in the Vietnamese restaurants of the Twin Cities. Others in my family won't eat Vietnamese food but will eat a whole box in .5 seconds.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:45 (twelve years ago)

there's nothing particularly minnesotan about those.

j., Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:48 (twelve years ago)

or vietnamese.

j., Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:49 (twelve years ago)

Others in my family won't eat Vietnamese food

what the fuck?

hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:49 (twelve years ago)

The Lotus was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in the Twin Cities and built an empire on those CCWTs.

Stevie, my mom (who likes all Far East food bar this) and sister (who is picky for a glutton) don't like tons of root ginger and/or lemon grass in their food. My mom will try anything once unless there's liver in it.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Saturday, 20 April 2013 07:06 (twelve years ago)

I have eaten at the lotus somewhere between 1000 and an infinite amount of times.
To even out the scales, sawatdee sushi had some pretty horrific rolls on their menu for a while.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 20 April 2013 07:14 (twelve years ago)

The chefs at Sushi Sawatdee come from Vietnam, Korea, Laos and Thailand, but the only trace of Thai flavor to the menu is in the dynamite roll, made with very hot Thai peppers. In addition to a big selection of sushi and sashimi, the menu offers tempura, chicken teriyaki, and grilled steak, fish and shrimp entrees.

The cooks obviously had fun inventing and naming the special sushi rolls, which include the Marilyn Monroll (grilled chicken with cucumber and mustard sauce, $9.50) and a John Wayne Roll, filled with grilled beef, mustard and sesame oil ($9.50). I especially liked the Rock & Roll, filled with salmon, eel and mango ($7.50). You can get a pretty good sampling of the sushi offerings by ordering the sushi Imperial ($24) -- 12 different varieties of sushi, including clam, squid, octopus, shrimp, tamago, tuna, yellowtail, and two different kinds of fish roe.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 20 April 2013 07:17 (twelve years ago)

Those are GROSS. If I'm having hand rolls in Minneapolis, they won't be from anywhere worse than Fuji-Ya. I have also eaten at the Lotus countless times, starting with to-go Vietnamese eggrolls when HS friends with cars could get me there and back to school in 10 minutes.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Saturday, 20 April 2013 07:50 (twelve years ago)

I have never seen an Italian beef or Polish sausage egg roll in Chicago, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

The Chinese takeouts here in Wisconsin don't have cheesesteak egg roll, but the Philly cheesesteak restaurant does,

I have had a BBQ eggroll (filled with pork, slaw, sauce) around here. it was.... not good

sons of plutarchy (will), Saturday, 20 April 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

I have seen poutine on the menu here in Quebec and a General Tao Poutine. No cheesesteak egg rolls.

sofatruck, Saturday, 20 April 2013 13:30 (twelve years ago)

general tso's poutine sounds amazing would try immediately

That kind of surprises me -- it sounds like it would work, as long as the slaw is vinegary and not creamy.

Uh wow I had no idea about cheesesteak eggrolls until this thread. I've only ever had traditional egg rolls.

Slaw was creamy :-/

sons of plutarchy (will), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)

Okay, yeah, that would be "do not want" territory. But a vinegary/peppery slaw like they have at Abe's in Clarksdale would be great in a 'cue roll.

Thirty-Six Views of ILX, by Mari3sa (WilliamC), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

cheesesteak eggroll sounds both delicious and regrettable. like most fried meat'n'cheese wads.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)

It's awesome bcz like usu they have it at bars or at places like Friday's but you can get one at 2am at a lot of generic Chinese takeout places. It's rad.

hoda nkotb (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

something tells me that the garbage cans behind this restaurant are full of empty hot pockets boxes

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

Van Horn Street: La Betise on St Hubert does one, think there are others. Not Banquise though.

sofatruck, Saturday, 20 April 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

^Not a Chinese restaurant though. I swear I have seen it at one, but can't find it... maybe I'm wrong.

sofatruck, Saturday, 20 April 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)
