James Gray

i'd say it's one of the three:
brackets=reasons

Kechiche - (social/humanistic)
Farhadi - (social/humanistic)
Payne - (american/humanistic (?!))

the odds are very much against a winner as atrocious as Amour.

some more info:

http://www.fandor.com/blog/daily-cannes-2013-lineup

Quite excited about Bruce Dern in Nebraska, frankly.

Went with Gray here, in the hope he fulfills his promise. But no one gives a shit who wins the Palme, esp in the US.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

It's a big deal for cinephiles and within the film industry.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

But it's not a big deal for Morbs, so everyone else should stfu about it.

cacao nibs (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

"the guy didn't made a proper film...ever?"

that means he did only shitty films

nostormo, Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Claire Denis used to be the head of Un Certain Regard jury before, so one can expect her to win

nostormo, Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

not as much as the Oscars obv

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 April 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

also, Ari Folman's latest, The Congress, will be screened out of competition.
does it mean it's not as good as Waltz With Bashir was?

nostormo, Thursday, 18 April 2013 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

i have not seen every steven soderbergh film but he so prolifically extrudes garbage that it's fair game to expansively & generally talk shit about him.

psyched for the mess of new shit not coming to an arthouse cinema near me anytime soon; new kore-eda, denis, polanski, &c. is it still worth mentioning what a bro-down these festival line ups are or are we past that now.

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

zhang-ke also, psyched

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

i can't think of a prolific American filmmaker who makes LESS garbage than Soderbergh, cept maybe those Ocean's sequels I never saw.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

soderbergh's made some movies i really hated, but im not gonna piss on a guy just because he shot for the moon and came up short. he's a quality filmmaker

turds (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

don't wanna hear drum & bass remixes of 70s elevator soul muzak while i'm looking at the moon thank you very much. i just don't get it, the performances always p bad, the focus just occasional workmanlike & cluttered ~excitement sequences~.

i just read a lil about some of these movies; that the zhang-ke is a road movie w/martial arts sequences, that the sorrentino is another tony sevillo film.

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

Long ago read the Kleist novella Michael Kohlhaas is based on, which also inspired the revenge plotline in Doctorow's Ragtime

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

can't soderburgh just retire like he's always saying he's going to do? because films are so boring and rote (so lets make a lot more boring rote movies)

amazed Denis is not in the main competition.

the coens trailer looks boring even by their low standards.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

so so psyched for the denis. i am in a minority in repping for her vendredi soir, whose actor she's working w again.

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

nah they don't have low standards, i dunno why i said that. their standards are high but it's all such smug bs. this looks terrible though and, worse, has carey mulligan in it. she'll ruin anything.

xpost to myself

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:31 (eleven years ago) link

I rep for Vendredi Soir, though I don't think it's her best work. xpost

Also excited about new Desplechin, but I feel that can go either way. He's always teetering on massive self-indulgence. Don't know anything about this one though.

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

suggestions online that Denis is out of the main competition "at her own request".

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

i disliked the last desplechin as much as i loved the previous one. both are self indulgent though.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I should have said "self-indulgent to the point of unwatchability".

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

mulligan shines in a bunch of otherwise not so hot movies imo. i am always a lil frustrated by her extra-cinematic public persona considering how good she is in the actual films.

the trailer for the coens thing makes it look kind of ghoulishly period piece ish, but they're generally very good lately, so.

ps just fwiw & to record for potentially triumphant posterity, i voted kore-eda here

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

Denis would have been the only woman in this sausage-fest.

holy shit, come on.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

i mean, am i missing someone here? i'm against tokenism but it's ALL MEN? is that right?

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Thursday, 18 April 2013 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah
i mean next year will presumably be martel & a couple others but given that this list isn't all heavy-hitting they could diversify their selection process a lil

daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Thursday, 18 April 2013 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi is a woman. And there are six women in Un Certain Regard, which frankly only makes it worse...

Voted Zhangke out of spite. Not gonna happen though. This lineup is rubbish.

And who wins the Palm is kinda important with regards to what will be in cinemas in a country like Denmark. So I'm crossing my fingers it won't be something we would have seen anyway.

Frederik B, Thursday, 18 April 2013 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi is a woman.

i'm a cinematic philistine these days but i can't really get excited about this line-up. I'm very much looking forward to the Denis though.

tonight's films:

nebraska: alexander payne is still awful in black & white
la vie d'adéle: very french in the best way, super-erotic, emotional, lesbian love story, i loved it. sat two rows down from the stars and stood for the 15-minute standing ovation. whatsherface is gonna be a huge star. she was amazing.

in other news, sitting in the fourth row centre at cannes still doesnt stop some people from texting during movies

i don't know Whatsherface.

Have only really hated About Schmidt among Payne's films.

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 May 2013 01:40 (eleven years ago) link

who directed vie d'adele?

payne has made some good films. election is a little masterpiece IMO. the rest of them have some really well-observed moments and often promising beginnings but they then take some severe turns into conventionality.... he seems too willing to sell out his characters for a laugh or worse for a sentimental conclusion.

i guess re the descendants it just seemed like a mess structurally, thematically... for which i blame the screenwriters more than payne. naturally it won an oscar.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 24 May 2013 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

also the emotional beats in that movie felt increasingly false, by the end i was watching this stuff i could recognize in some abstract way as "moving" but it completely failed to move me.

music was very pretty but i knew that before the movie.

Kechiche is the first African director to win the prize in 38 years, and only the second overall. As far as I can figure out, based on wikipedia. Also, he dedicated the win to the revolution in Tunisia. Actually, I'm quite pleased with the awards. Don't think the Coens need any more, but oh well.
