This would be on October 5 (Saturday) or 6 (Sunday).

These are the days that Gareth has listed as most convenient for him. I am fine with anything. There are more of you out there. What dates are convenient for you?

Do we want to just go to a pub, or would a good meal be in order as well?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 27 September 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

the 5th is good for me but i'm in the wrong country.
bummer.
ah well.
often better not to meet the people you read online, in my case anyway.....i get shy when confronted with reality.
hope you all have a nice fap.

donna (donna), Friday, 27 September 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Both of these dates are fine for me.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 27 September 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

update from other thread, for those who are interested & didn't know:
the metro cafe is now closed, and i think the location is becoming condos.

did anyone go to the exit bar opening/have they been since? do you have any comments? http://www.exitbar.com

ginny, Sunday, 29 September 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ok lets do the 5th cause it is saturday. would we like to have a meal? or just drinks?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 30 September 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

5th sounds cool. i don't mind whether its meal & drinks or just drinks. both options sound cool!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 30 September 2002 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

well we can;t have you eating alone on a Saturday, so let us eat! But what to eat? anyone have any thoughts? is it just three of us?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i think we'll need to decide by thursday morning washington time. i'm leaving friday! i'll need to know when and where to turn up!

also, are there any internet cafes in washington? i'm going to need to be in web/email contact for this, for boston, for nyc and poss for philly!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

ok I think I am just gonna take charge seeing as I proposed this darn thing and I am currently between jobs and have nothing to do.
Gareth, the first question is your budget... do you want a fancy meal, midpriced or cheap? Do you want Asian, European, African? We have good Ethiopian places here, but I don't know them that well. Good vietnamese is available in Arlington, but I would understand if you felt strange going out into the (subway accessible) suburbs. I am thinking that we should have dinner around 8pm or 9pm, right? There is also a good French place in Georgetown that has very good deals for lunch. It is something like $13 for soup, entree, glass of wine and dessert. At night, the entree themselves cost at least $13.

You may also want to think about neighborhoods. Adams Morgan is the local bohemian-ish place, but it is a little run-down. Dupont Circle is better, and there is some great Chinese food there. Georgetown is the most expensive and the most well-preserved. Alot of tourists and suburbanites there, but there is a nice canal, and some good food.

If anyone is coming besides Gareth, J.Lu (I am going to email both of you soon), and myself, please speak soon.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

dupont circle looks pretty good, quick glance through guide book says cafe citron looks pretty good, but any suggestions really, i don't mind what type of food, midpriced is usually best (or cheap, whichever) - i'm not that comfortable in proper fancy places, i feel like an imposter!

yea, dupont circle. adams-morgan looks ok as well though...

i'm staying on corner of 11 and K, so they're both pretty accessible from there, right?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

11th and K is near the Metro Center subway stop; Dupont Circle is just a couple stops up on the Red line. There is no direct subway service to Adams-Morgan, but if the weather's good it's a nice walk from Dupont.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

( aarrgghh j.lu you beat me ;-) )

well, you are three or four blocks away from two metro stations, so you will be all set. it is a bit of a hassle to take the metro to adams morgan because the stop is a bit of a walk away from the neighborhood, but if you are a city person, you will have no troubles.

the subway system is great in DC except it closes around midnight during the week, and at 2 in the morning on the weekends. the stations are clean and safe, though, and the 70's brutalist concrete architecture is breathtaking!

as for cafe citron, I don't know it. but we don't have to go somewhere that I have been.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the washingtonpost.com review of Cafe Citron, with some user comments.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

if Dupont Circle is good then it looks like the best bet. as for where, i don't mind, make suggestions!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

cor you guys are both online right now!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am on AIM... aajjgg1469)

here are my favorite places to eat in the DC area:
1. City Lights of China in Dupont Circle (GREAT food, rushed service)
2. Bistro Francais in Georgetown (the place with the great deal mentioned above)
3. The Vietnamese place on restaurant row in Crystal City
4. Jaleo (decent Spanish downtown)
5. Pizzeria Paradiso in Dupont Circle
6. Duangrats in Virginia (the best Thai in the region, only accessible by car, so only if we are hardcore Thai food lovers!)

I like to drink coffee at Cafe La Ruche in Gerogetown. I think I have been to Tryst in Adams Morgan, which is a cool place as well.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not on AIM:(

pizzeria paradiso, whats that like? city lights?

what about drinks? these places serve beer? etc etc etc!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

paradiso is a gourmet wood burning pizza place. I have only been once, but I liked it. the fresh mozz. was very fresh. the rest. is small and quite nice, but you can wear jeans there.

city lights is weird. the food is very good. i trust the meat used in their food more than any other chinese place I have been. the food, however, comes out in five minutes, and if the place is busy, we will be rushed out. I have had a two course meal there in 30 minutes. it is a good place to eat, but maybe not on a saturday night, unless we wanted to eat there and go for drinks somewhere else.

I am sure that all of these places have at least beer.

I am really not an expert on DC, so j.lu, if you have any suggestions, feel free to comment.

also, would either of you be interested in going to a museum during the day? I am gonna do it regardless, as it has been at least a month since I have been.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

1. City Lights of China in Dupont Circle (GREAT food, rushed service)

When I last ate there (2 years ago?) the food wasn't terribly impressive. However, I suppose we could have dinner there, and then work our way up Conn. Ave./over to Adams Morgan.

2. Bistro Francais in Georgetown (the place with the great deal mentioned above)

I like it but Georgetown isn't easy to get to.

3. The Vietnamese place on restaurant row in Crystal City

Don't know what place you mean but I trust your judgement.

4. Jaleo (decent Spanish downtown)

Very nice tapas.

5. Pizzeria Paradiso in Dupont Circle

Peter Pastan no longer runs this place. His new pizza place, 2 Amys, is good but is in a neighborhood without Metrorail.

6. Duangrats in Virginia (the best Thai in the region, only accessible by car, so only if we are hardcore Thai food lovers!)

I do have a car, so this is possible (perhaps if we made an afternoon of it, and took Gareth out to some of the Northern Virginia CD stores?)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and as far as I know all of these places serve beer, but not all of them stock an extensive variety. (For example, Jaleo's is more about sherry and other Spanish wines.)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

where is 2 amys exactly?

Duangrats, by the way, is actually a bit expensive ($13- $15 entress) so that may be too much.
The vietnamese place is the one with the outdoor seating on a deck. There is also a good Lebanese place on that street as well.

as for city lights, they have a good kung pao chicken, and good vegetable dumplings. have you been to Meiwah, J? Some think that place is much better.

oh, and the walk from the Foggy Bottom station is no worse than the walk from the Adams Morgan station, so it really comes down to the weather.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

just dropping in.. I don't live in DC anymore so can't make it!.. damn! but used to live right near 2 Amys, it's on Macomb St near the Nat'l Cathedral. You can take Tenleytown Metro and walk south down Wisc. Ave about 10-15 min, or (easiest) take the 30/32/34/35 bus which runs across Pennsylvania Ave, by Foggy Bottom and across Georgetown, then straight up Wisconsin all the way to Friendship Heights. OR take the N2/N4/N6 (all run same route) from Dupont Circle up Massachusetts Ave and get off right at Mass/Wisc Ave cross, then go north up Wisconsin. There is also a 90 bus which goes from near Macomb St (by the Giant market) right across Cleveland Park & down through Adams Morgan on 18th st and across U St, which is handy, but it unfortunately stops running at midnight.
By the way the National Cathedral is worth seeing at night, it's v tranquil & pretty then, nice lighting.

Man, I miss DC! I want a milkshake from Ben's Chili Bowl right now.

daria gray (daria gray), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, 2 Amys would work quite well for me -- it's just a few blocks from where I live, and it's near the Zebra Room, one of my favorite bars.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

ohno, not the Zebra Lounge! aaaackkk

maybe I will go have a chocolate martini with my girlfriends after work, all the young professionals live in Glover Park.. la la la.. There should be a Glover Park theme song.

daria gray (daria gray), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe I will go have a chocolate martini with my girlfriends after work, all the young professionals live in Glover Park.. la la la.. There should be a Glover Park theme song.

I say, I resemble that remark!

Seriously, what's your problem with the Zebra Lounge?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

somewhere thats cool to eat, not rushed or anything, then a nice bar or something. are we any closer to something? i'm going to be offline in 4 hours until i get there (although i'll be in an internet cafe tomorrow sometime, so no mega-rush). should we meet around 7.30? is that a good time?

hmm, i don't know what you look like!!! this is me

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/images/me012.jpg

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 October 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, how about 2 Amys Saturday night at 7:30, and then we take the 90 bus to U Street for a bar crawl (Kingpin, Velvet Lounge, Ben's Chili Bowl, Polly's, Black Cat)?

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 3 October 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

that is all fine with me... though I am not a heavy drinker, so I will probably have only one beer at each place.
I will post a picture when I figure out how to put it up. It is in the "my picture" section of "my msn" related to hotmail... so how do I get it here?

also, I am planning on going to the museums this weekend. I am gonna go regardless. I am gonna go on Sunday, probably to the National Gallery, and the National Building Museum. If anyone wants to come along...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Would we like to meet at the Tenleytown metro station? This might be easier for Gareth. If it is inconvenient for you, J, maybe I will just meet Gareth there. If you, Gareth, think you will be able to find your way, then we will just meet at 2 Amy's.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i can make it to 2 amys, which subway stop is it?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Tenleytown is the metro stop... but you may want to take a bus... daria posted the information above...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean you may find the bus easier 'cause you are already downtown... I am in Virginia, so the train is better for me...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM SO JEALOUS THAT I CAN'T BE THERE. U Street is fantastic; RIP State of the Union.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

oops! yes, i see, doesn't matter, well doesn't make any difference, i'll meet you there. so, what time are we saying, 7.30?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, how about Gareth and Aaron meet up at the Tenleytown metro station Saturday evening. In the meantime I'll get to 2 Amys by 7:30 and put my name in for a table for three (unless there are lurkers who would like to join us? speak now or forever hold your peace). Then when you two get there ask for Julia Lutz.

And we don't have to do a literal crawl along U Street, but I figure Gareth should see Ben's Chili Bowl, the 9:30's Back Car and the Black Cat's Red Room while he's in town.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

ok Gareth and I will meet at 7:20 at Tenleytown. We will walk to 2 Amys and meet you there.
Everything else will be planned in person.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM SO JEALOUS THAT I CAN'T BE THERE.

You're not alone. I should just call in sick for a week and a half and lurk on the Eastern Seaboard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The Ned Raggett East Coast '02 Tour? I could go for that.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

It couldn't beat Brian's "Bongs, Beef and Blowjobs" tour from earlier this year, but hey.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm here!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 4 October 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth and Alan now both stalk America! A nation trembles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 October 2002 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Gareth! Welcome to America -- and I'll see you tomorrow at 2 Amys!

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 5 October 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

glad you are safe and sound! see you at the Tenleytown metro station! Email if you have any question, problems, etc., and more important, get some rest!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 5 October 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch out for snipers, yo.
Er, the Zebra Lounge was kinda like having the Chi-Cha Lounge on my street, and whenever I am near a place where the women wear tight black pants and drink really large martinis w/apple and chocolate flavors, I just want to barf. I guess at the end of the day, my biggest problem w/the place was that I went in once to get a latte in daytime, wasn't even busy, & the staff was completely standoffish & rude, & it pissed me off. No I don't want to order at the bar and have it in a damn paper cup, thx very much. argh!
Enjoy DC, though, Gareth! I guess you came at kind of a weird time tho, how are folks around there ? A bit wary ?

daria gray (daria gray), Saturday, 5 October 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the shootings are tragic and freaky (I don;t mean to sound flip.), but it doesn't do any good to worry.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 5 October 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

No it doesn't. that's the scary part, maybe. if I still lived there my mother would prob. be calling every other hour worried about me even though it doesn't do any good.

on an entirely different subject, I don't mean to sound super b!tchy re: DC lounges, it's more a personal dislike/discomfort around places where you've gotta get dressed up to go have a drink.

daria gray (daria gray), Saturday, 5 October 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I am usually already dressed up, but never end up going anywhere nice so I have the opposite problem. You should have seen me in Worcester MA. my freshman year of school in the winter when I would have grey wool trousers and black wool sweater and full length coat and be sitting in McDonalds reading the newspaper (on Saturday night) haha!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 5 October 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hey dc people.........do be careful out there on your fap ok.!!

donna (donna), Saturday, 5 October 2002 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother lives in Montgomery County (not near any of the shooting sites)...perhaps I should call her and tell her to be careful.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 5 October 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm in an internet cafe on 17th st, dupunt circle. i'll be at tenleytown at 7.15ish. i don't really have dress up clothes. well, i've got my trusty black polo neck (see pic above) but its like 90 degrees!

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 5 October 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i am drunken

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 6 October 2002 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I, somehow, was not hungover this morning!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I wasn't hungover either (a testimonial to the power of french fries at 2:30am!), but my wrists hurt for no reason that I could understand, and I'd had a bizarre dream (the details of which I'll spare you).

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

did you have a good time, Gareth and Julia? I really did! i was very nervous, but you two were so very nice!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I had a good time. And if you were nervous it didn't show -- you seemed way cool. I'm glad to have finally met you!

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

*blushes*

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i had a great time, it was fun, i hope the others go so well!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 October 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron--where is your picture? Gareth said you all had a good time in DC! Fun! I do go home to NoVA so would love to have a similar meet up with Aaron & J. Lu, unless of course Aaron makes it to NYC before that! Did you guys make it to 9:30 club or black cat? Where else did you crawl too? Gareth can drink a lot, can't he?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 20 October 2002 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am on hiatus. I will be back shortly to ILx.
I have picutre on msn, but I don;t know how to post it.
if there are faps I will come!
gareth can drink a lot.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 October 2002 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth can drink a lot, can't he?

this really isnt that true, i felt quite ill after the dc meet, and i felt totally destroyed after the new york one, the damage was extensive. oh!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 October 2002 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth: you sure weren't showing it during the FAP.

Mary: when you're back in NoVa start a new thread or revive this one. Even if no other ILXers are in the DC area, I'll be glad to meet you for a pint. In the meantime, if Aaron makes it back to NY, he'll be a nice addition to your FAPs.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

J. Lu, great! Eastern seabord ILx is roxor!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth: you sure weren't showing it during the FAP.

no, i'm fine when i'm out (ok, i guess this proves you right, i am able to drink a reasonable amount)

but i really suffer the next day, i get awful hangovers, even if have had hardly any alcohol (its dehydration basically, when i actually remember to drink water before bed its usually much milder the following day)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
REVIVE cause Geeta is coming!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

of course i was dumb enough to revive this after both j.lu and geeta left the AIm chat to go to bed!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)
