i'd put "S/D" in the title but i'm really just wondering about the "search" half. it is a bit weird (relative to film at least) that outside of anime/spanish soaps/uhh degrassi there is v little awareness of shows outside the US and UK. there have to be some gems, right? post them here, plz

We have tonnes of French and Scandinavian crime shows in the UK. Engrenages, The Bridge and the Krister Henriksson Wallander series are personal favourites.

The Russian show Brigada was terrific. I had the theme tune as my ringtone for about five years.

The first series of the Australian gangster serial Underbelly was superb too.

the original Danish series "The Killing" got enough attention in English-speaking TV land to get adapted on AMC, though I haven't seen either version.

Some reasonably good Aus series (I'll likely get scoffed at for this): SeaChange, Secret Life of Us (at least the first 2 seasons, then it went to shit), Rake, Mr & Mrs Murder.

Xps, I think Braquo, which I still haven't seen, gets most of the French Wire comparisons. It is meant to be great though.
