I've only seen the first 3, but it's pretty amazing so far. Love the premise, the pacing and how they're letting the story unroll.
Don't know if the lead character's stilted speech patterns will end up grating - but it kind of makes sense given his story.
Cons: the full array of stock character Southern bad guys - including an evil Senator and a hothead sheriff - and some unclear major plot elements (why exactly was he released? - the new DNA evidence doesn't seem to exactly exonerate him).
Anyone else watching this?

That character name is pretty much the only thing I dislike about this. Aden Young is incredible.

Yeah, finished up the season a few weeks backāsome minor quibbles with the last two episodes, but otherwise this is my favorite ongoing series premiere of 2013.
Hopefully this gains some wider recognition when it goes up on Netflix soon. It's a really terrific character study that feels like it transcends a lot of the television drama tropes.

My gosh, this show is just so incredible.
― avant-sarsgaard (litel), Friday, 20 June 2014 05:58 (eleven years ago)
brilliant script. otherwise, the show is lacking narrative tension at this point, imo, but that will surely change. i'm def sticking with it.

The first episode back was so dull I've been letting the two episodes since just sit on my dvr unwatched. Someone tell me it gets better, plz.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 July 2014 22:40 (eleven years ago)
I just watched the third one and it's definitely feeling the effects of the expansion to ten episodes. Might want to check back in a couple of weeks
― Number None, Monday, 7 July 2014 22:44 (eleven years ago)
That's disappointing. The first season moved slow too, but the debut this season was almost in stasis.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 July 2014 23:12 (eleven years ago)
Just finished the first season. I love this show, love the pacing, and I'm looking forward to season two when it appears on Netflix. Also nice to see the Peasall sisters (from O Brother) singing and playing in s1, e5. Love that bluegrass gospel harmony.
― banjoboy, Tuesday, 8 July 2014 05:33 (eleven years ago)
second season was so slow it felt like it was moving backwards at times. but i kind of like his antique dealer country bohemian buddy.
― Brio2, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 21:33 (ten years ago)
I recorded the whole season, but ended up leaving all the eps on a dvr I turned back in to the cable company when I moved. Maybe I'll catch them someday.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 21:40 (ten years ago)
anyone watching season 3? i quite like this show though s3 possibly even slower than s2 and s1, if that's possible.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 July 2015 22:32 (ten years ago)
that's not what I was hoping to hear
― Number None, Monday, 20 July 2015 22:35 (ten years ago)
haha. ep 2 was better than ep1 and had some good scenes. i find it hard to believe they know what story to tell. i kind of like the idea of a tv show with no plot and a load of damaged characters just slowly festering, but yeah, something prob needs to happen. i think the acting is great and the scenes within the stasis can be brilliantly written.

hi i'm 3 or 4 eps away from finishing season 3
teddy just shot himself in the leg trying to shoot the flappy tire store thing and I loled a lot
it's funny, s3 doesn't pick up as many storylines as I'd like and it's not as interesting storywise as s2 or s1 but it's still really great, because I enjoy pretty much any time that I spend with these characters now, i think. even the arty nashville gal doesn't bug me. and I like how the theme of this season seems to be 'freedom' in all of its permutations. people granting it to each other, figuring out what it means to them, wanting it, accepting it, trying to get it, etc.
my crush on amantha has not dissipated, nor my crushes on daniel or teddy jr.

also can they give Aden Young a goddamn Emmy now. what the hell does this show have to do
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 06:58 (eight years ago)
Ugh, message lost.
It was a solid season but I wished they'd wrapped up some of the storylines a little sooner, especially Teddy and Tawney's relationship. I liked the artist though, I'm glad they showed another aspect of the regional culture than just small town conservatism and halfway houses.
― viborg, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 10:38 (eight years ago)
I see Aden Young is in an Australian show called the Code. Anyone know if that's any good, or just boilerplate procedural?
― viborg, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 10:44 (eight years ago)
i started watching but haven't got a sense of it yet
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 18 January 2017 17:40 (eight years ago)
you mean s4 veg!
i binged all of this show over xmas and kinda regret not writing some notes or something because i already cant remember anything to articulate. i guess i really enjoyed it more as like the best soap ever more than for its grand thematic statement and heavy-handed semi-magical shawshankisms (actually a lot of it was still good and moving and non-negligible tbf). like there were so many moments where i was amazed i could be so invested in character interactions and plot developments that would have seemed so cliche on paper. (amantha with the business guy at the hotel! i was like ahhhh no, but jon, but i understand, oh god!)
