Iirc peeps around here hated this, but I just watched it, and I think it's fucking magic. Would have made my top ten of 2012 if I'd seen it in time.

was discussed a little bit here Come Anticipate Martin McDonagh's 'In Bruges'

Also the Tarantino comparisons are way way off, it's like the weird offspring of the first 3 coen brothers films and kiss kiss bang bang.

Oh yeah, that's prob where I got the feeling that peeps didn't like it. First Rockwell performance I've liked since that batshit chuck Barrus thingy.

some first-year writing class "I couldn't think of anything to write so I wrote about my writers' block, lol postmodern :D" bullshit IMO

i dont like this guys movies and his plays are stage-Oirish rubbish

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 3 May 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)

eh i didnt get hung up in the meta shit - basically its a really funny movie, walken and rockwell are in top mode, and i dont think dude was on some "look at me i am deep" tip at all, just hung an highly enjoyable movie on the screenwriter premise and went with it.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 3 May 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

I can imagine enjoying this movie strictly for the performances and verbosity, but it was pretty much a mediocre meta lark, and a not terribly compelling one at that. Don't you see, the movie he is making is the movie we are watching!!!!!!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 May 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

man if i started using meta bullshit to exclude new films to watch, i would not get to watch many films

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 3 May 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)

I'm going to make a movie about a guy making a movie about making a movie that no one wants to see because it looks too meta.

Though I think McDonagh actually succeeded in being Kaufmanesque, and people don't notice because they hate the Ritchie-isms so much. I can't blame them.

Wes Brodicus, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 11:51 (nine years ago)

Look, all this is true but when they realise in the car what's going on with Rockwell its absolutely fuckin great

And everyone is good in this, so yeah fine the script and conceit are too on-point, too clever and wrap up too neatly to resonate (a line even in Bruges trod close to at times) this is a funny, stylish movie with very cool actors turning in very cool performances ugh how awful.

I kind of enjoyed this movie but now feel guilty about it.
