Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a saturday mark so it's okay to get up that late (when i start the work again on monday i'll have to work six days a week, this is gonna be my last free sat for a while).

anyway. one cup of cofee (with milk) and one of tea. soemtimes i have two cups of coffee.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

OK now i got that Blur song in my head...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i rarely drink coffee. tea however by the bucket loads.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

c-line woman...

i had a cappucino in a paper cup yesterday evening at kings cross station waiting for a leeds train which was delayed and then had to go round the hertford loop due to track failure. i listened to cdwalkman and had a couple of beers and looked out the window and thought of the dead dreamers and the butane flames and the brickfield desire/cold house ennui of the A1M and the sloping doncaster houses. then i thought of my new place to live and my america trip next week and flipped from the pickettywitch to the warren g.

i don't like coffee that much mark, i like tea

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

that's ok gareth, i don't judge ppl

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

2 cups, pretty much invariably. One at breakfast and one after lunch. I can't drink after 6pm as I'm stupidly hyper-senstivie to coffee - one weak cup on an empty stomach and I'm shaking and falling over within minutes.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how you folks handle that stuff. I usually drink the tea equivalent of the caffeine in no more than a cup of coffee, usually a bit less. For a while I was drinking iced coffee which looked like it was about two cups worth, but it didn't seem to have that effect on me. I wonder if it was diluted somehow. Anyway, I don't normally drink coffee, and am very sensitive to caffeine. I can take in less than the caffeine in a cup of coffee, in the morning, and still be bothered by it on some days. I usually drink iced tea, actually, which makes me even wimpier. I don't really like warm beverages.

If I drank 6-8 cups, I'd be bonkers. Maybe some time when I have nothing to do, I will drink 6-8 cups of coffee and spend the next 48 hours posting to ILX.

gareth you drink beer on the train? by yrself?

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 28 September 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably drink the equivalent of 10 cups a day, which this book is making me regret

melissa (melissa), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

One per day.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Two mugs in the morning when I wake up.

Then when I get to work, someone often says "Let's discuss this over coffee" and I go have another one. I've switched from drinking coffee after lunch to having a nice mug of steamed milk with lots of foam- just like a caffeineless latte, yum! Most espresso places assume that if you order a steamed milk, you want a shot of almond flavor in it, though. So I always make a point of asking for no flavor- the almond stuff tastes horrible.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

< 1 per day. i love coffee but more crucial is that i can rely on it to keep me awake if i have a 3 hour seminar in the afternoon (which happens all too often), and if i had it every day it'd stop having that effect. unfortunately it tends to hit me pretty hard + i become even more hyper than normal (and believe me that's scary); i had two mochas one afternoon last week + proceeded to send several really long gibbering emails to ppl + then walk round the department at speed talking 20 to the dozen to anyone unfortunate enough to bump into me.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 28 September 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Zero. Don't care for it. I don't drink any tea either - my ex-wife used to drink two gallons a day, was our best estimate: genuine physical addiction.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

someone told me there's more caffiene in a choccy bar than in a pro-plus

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 28 September 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

used to be continuous amounts all day, now between 3 - 6 cups. woke up just awhile ago to no coffee in the house which i generally moan loudly about but secretly like - it forces me out of the apartment and down the street to the cafe for an espresso.

the actual mr. jones (actual), Saturday, 28 September 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't drink any coffee ever. I drink about 4 cups of tea a day.

(me too, actual mr jones: when i actually got out into the street to hunt down some douw egbert's, it was a really nice early autumn midday to be out in)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 28 September 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i onyl drink coffee in music school so i dont sleep in a important class

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 28 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

A ludicrous amount. In the 5-6 cups a day range at least. I love coffee.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 28 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth you drink beer on the train? by yrself?

just realised this makes me sound like a complete mentalist! this isn't my usual train journey, the 3 hour GNER journey back to my parents where they come round with a trolley with beer and serve everyone (LOOK, everyone else was drinking too ok? all brits are alcoholics anyway, the smoking carriage of the GNER is like some kinda opium den, hahah its better than most pubs!)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

3-6 cups a day. split pretty evenly between first thing in the morning and right after I unwind from work. But I try not to consume caffene after 7pm thats beer time...

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you people who don't do caffeine get through the day? I'd be clinically dead without it. However, I have tried to cut back to one cup (perhaps 10 ounces of strong French roast) of coffee in the morning, and one Diet Coke with lunch. Although I find myself slipping, and having another cup of coffee during the day at work, probably because it's there and I'm usually bored.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

None. I actually had a fair amount in Dunedin since apparently most there couldn't live without it. ;-) But not touched a drop since my return, and though I'll take the occasional cup in a long while (or blended drink or whatever) I just rely on life itself to do the recharge for me. :-)

Mike Hanle y (mike), Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i do get some caffeine, from sodas and other drinks. i bought this snapple thing the other day and then as i was drinking it i read the bottle and noticed that it had all these crazy things in it, caffeine, taurine, i guess i might as well have had a red bull :-P

ron (ron), Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

if I don't have any my head feels tightly packed with cotton and it takes me awhile to figure out what it is

i think just a day or two of this is all that it takes to sort out the addiction, no?

this is going to sound hopelessly lame but a really good substitute for late-in-the-day coffee is WATER

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 29 September 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and beers alone in the train = classic beyond doubt

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 29 September 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

1 in the morning before the train.
Up until recently, an XL from Tim Hortons before 10
another Tim's XL at 1.
It used to be 8 or 9 cups instead of the 5 I was down to, now its just about 3.

WHO STOLE MYUCKING COFFEE

Queen G (Queeng), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I drink tea mostly - about 4 or 5 cups a day - but will have filter coffee or a large latte if stopping for a cake and a drink while out doing something exhausting like shopping. Cafés don't seem to make tea properly, imo.

Black coffee is nice after a dinner party, but only if you have buckets of Tia Maria or a decent port with it.

C J (C J), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

In the summer I drink no caffeine but now I'm up at 5:30 so I have about 2 cups of tea in the morning. I have a serving of Turkish coffee about once a month, whenever we have guests for dinner.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 29 September 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

one in the morning
one when i get to work
and sometimes one in the evening. all iced, sometimes in the cafe frappe variety -- there are a ton of greek cafes around my neighborhood that have showed me how truly excellent things can be derived from the oft-derided instant coffee tin. (the key here, in case you were wondering, is the use of nescafe classic, the kind that's imported from greece.)

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 September 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

At least two, usually four. I try to switch to mountain dew or coke come 2:00 or so lest I go bonkers. Can't drink after dark or I don't sleep. Splitting headaches if I don't stay supplied. And yes, water cuts the late in the day headaches. Also I must have thick rich coffee and not the stupid sugar and cream candy crap.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 30 September 2002 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Between 1-2 cups in the morning -- but when I say cup my coffee mug is the size of one of those big 7-11 slurpee cups.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 30 September 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

now i see why mark s is always online. i generally don't drink coffeee unlesss i am doing an all-niter on an assignemtn. i prefer fake coffee. i like tea but i mostly only drink herbal tea, liquorice tea is my fave. the last real coffeeeee i had was a week ago at duane's house that rich maded.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 30 September 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

on the return journey on the train yesterday afternoon, i did not think of dead dreamers and butane flames. there were 4 south london geezers on the table next to me returning from a boozerweekend in leeds. it was 3.30 in the afternoon and they had approx 20-25 cans of lager, which they proceeded to drink on the journey down

gareth (gareth), Monday, 30 September 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I was traumatized at the age of eleven when I saw my parents desperately looking for a coffee filter, OH PLEASE GOD THERE MUST BE AT LEAST ONE LOUSY COFFEE FILTER LEFT, and they finally dug one out from under the sink, and it had some sort of stain on it, which I thought must have been from the dog's heartworm medicine. After maybe ten seconds of debate, they used the damn thing. I swore that I would never, never have that monkey on my back. I have maybe three cups a week.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 30 September 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

From PSF's Link Wray exegesis:

Link was simply just ahead of his time. "He took a lot of vitamins, did exercize--this is back in the fifties when nobody but Jack La Lanne was doin' this kinda thing," said Ellwood Brown. But Link had two meager vices--he was a television addict thirsty for old Westerns (according to his kids, he also loved Star Trek) and, said Brown, he drank coffee "twenty four hours a day." Link never seemed to sleep. He'd be working on a song and, as Rhonda Wray Sayen remembers, "I'd leave him to go to bed, wake up, and he'd be in the same position."

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to sit in front of a computer for six hours and not start nodding off?

Yeah, I know it's unhealthy. If I toiled in the fields, I'd probably not need to drink four cups of coffee a day.

nathalie, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

Anything between zero and about ten cups of coffee a day, depending on circumstances. I used to regularly drink about eight cups a day and get headaches if I went a long time without caffeine, but that seems to have eased off now that I'm more erratic in my coffee habit.

ailsa, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

I make a large mug of espresso in the morning (well, the stovetop moka machine, close enough). That used tobe all I'd have plus lots of tea, but the buggers at work have installed this awesome fully automatic proper espresso machine and its FREE so now I sometimes have 1 or 2 more during the day. Never after about 3pm though or I'd never sleep.

Trayce, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Actually there was a time (when I wasn't pregnant, it was after I quit breastfeeding) when I would drink a lot (for me anyway). Gave me MASSIVE migraines (instead of just horrible ones hah). So I couldn't really drink that much even if I wanted. I'm not really a coffee drinker.

That said, the gadget freak that I am and coupled with the fact that my husband is a coffee drinker, I'd love to have one of those swanky coffee machines.

nathalie, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

Today: About 10 cups throughout the day, tempered with about a gallon of Drop Top Amber Ale this evening. Yin and Yang, biotches.

Seriously if anyone would like to take a 10 day detox hike through Willamette National Forest, I'm game.

Kerm, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

Her father Gary, who runs The Sandwich Bar in Stanley, said: "She did not realise she was drinking double measures.

"I have always stressed to my children the importance of moderation but Jasmine got caught out on this occasion."

I take it from this he thinks it's ok for his 17 year old daughter to drink 7 single espressos in a shift. Strange definition of "moderation".

I drink a large latte with an extra shot every morning when I start work and a couple of mugs of instant when I get home (or a cappuccino if I can be arsed making it, which is rare). I usually drink one or two cans of diet coke a day too, which adds a fair chunk to my caffeine intake.

I usually have 2 or 3 if I'm at work, 1 or 2 at the weekend. I can tell I'm addicted to the first one of the day, I don't feel right until I've had it. It feels a bit like nicotine cravings, which I guess makes sense since nicotine & caffeine both stimulate the same part of the brane.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

i have about one day a year where i don't have a morning coffee -- everyone should try it, it's nuts.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

I can't do it. Some mornings I tell myself I'm not going to have a coffee then autopilot kicks in and I find myself in a coffee shop demanding a fix.

onimo, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

wait, 'can't function in the mornings without coffee' is a real thing? I thought it was just some wacky extrapolation made up by television.

c sharp major, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

I could function perfectly well without coffee in the mornings until I started having a coffee every morning. Just as I currently function perfectly well without shooting heroin 3 times a day but would struggle to do so if I started shooting heroin 3 times a day.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 February 2020 07:36 (six years ago)

Two pint glasses of cold brew (I'm lazy so I've started buy premade that works out to be the same as making it w/ decent beans), usually in the afternoon. Sometimes adding in a can of Cuvee nitro cold brew if I'm by the grocery store that has it.

Caffeine doesn't affect me much, I just like the taste since I gave up Coke.
