Anyone seen this? Came out a couple years back but is only now getting an American release. I caught it this afternoon as part of a small Japanese film series.

Liked it. Not great, but sweet and diverting. A warmhearted coming of age melodrama with a bit of political subtext (or so they say, I wouldn't have caught it).

Saw it yesterday. Really great, had to wipe my eyes a few times. Parts of it reminded me of Whisper of the Heart, which I also liked a lot. Could do without the dubbing, but I wasn't too bugged by it.

yeah, though i came away thinking of it as rather slight, it did "get me" a couple times. played it off like my cheek was itchy. and you saw it dubbed? weird, it was playing here in the original japanese, which i tend to prefer.

haven't seen whisper of the heart. suppose i oughtta remedy that...

two weeks pass...

this was so gorgeous. what always gets me about ghibli films is how well observed they feel -- i can't think of another animated film that's captured the way sunset looks the way this one does.

eleven months pass...

apparently Goro is directing a TV series that's airing this summer, 'Sanzoku no Musume Ronia' which is based on Astrid Lindgren's book 'Ronia the Robber's Daughter'. so not only is Ghibli (co)producing a TV series (their first?) but it's supposedly going to be fully 3D CG. yikes.
