Seinfeld did this very well once. Who else?

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

There's a terrible Friends episode when Rachel is dating a guy called Russ who is basically Ross and she can't see it. Hilarity fails to ensue.

ailsa, Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)

Father Ted, twice, kind of.

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:54 (twelve years ago)

Mighty Boosh did an episode based on this

nate woolls, Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:55 (twelve years ago)

like they have their arch-rivals on Rugged Island but also the spoof sitcom which is basically Father Ted that they find hilarious in one episode

Koné 2013 (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:55 (twelve years ago)

I'm almost certain Frasier has done this with Frasier and Niles, but can't think of the details. Frasier also did a sort-of version of it where Shelley Long turns up as Diane and she's written a play, which they show a bit of, which bases all its characters on the Cheers regulars.

NCIS has gone this route a couple times, I'm searching for YouTube examples.

Arguably the CSI franchise did it a ton, in part out of necessity to spin shit off or cross over

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 May 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)

There was the Simpsons episode where Lisa was traumatized by a new student even smarter and more Lisa-like than her.

Sci fi is king with this kind of thing- see also Star Trek Next Generation & Deep Space Nine, Futurama. I'm sure there must be others...

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 9 May 2013 13:30 (twelve years ago)

Did this happen in "The Young Ones" or was I under heavy medication at the time?

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 May 2013 13:34 (twelve years ago)

Certainly seems possible.

All I can think of is Neil's hippie friend who was exactly like him and also called Neil.

Not a TV show, but there's a scene in Shaun of the Dead where the characters file past replicas of themselves played by different actors.

Where you when this thread was started, Tom D? TS Vivienne Westwood vs. Vivian on "The Young Ones"

How I Met Your Mother: The Five Doppelgangers are the five look-alikes of each group member that the gang have come across during the series. They are, in order of appearance; Lesbian Robin, Moustache Marshall, Stripper Lily, Mexican Wrestler Ted, and Fertility Doctor Barney.

Huston we got chicken lol (Phil D.), Thursday, 9 May 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)

The Big Bang Theory gang have equivalent versions in China who've popped up a couple of times. Or maybe only once and I've seen that episode loads.

Guess Serena was Samatha's identical cousin, like on The Patty Duke Show.

re: Young Ones:

The episode where they do University Challenge (I think) has the 4 characters swap between themselves for a few minutes.

Nigel Planer becomes Rik, Ade becomes Mike, Rik becomes Vyvian and Chris became Neil.

(most were pretty good, but the new Neil was pretty bad)

I know they did this on "Leverage" where the team met another team where every member was a bizarro version of each of them.

There was an ep of Drew Carey where Christa Miller decided to get some female friends who all ended up being double of the main male cast.

Did any of the L&O shows ever pull this?

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 10 May 2013 10:33 (twelve years ago)

Just watched Two and a Half Men where Alan is given advice about his life by an old man, also played by Jon Cryer, who is an old bizarro version of himself.

koogs, Friday, 10 May 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

ah, ok, that's references to, not necessarily instances of.

but on buffy there was an episode where there were evil versions of willow etc. including a bit where willow was dressed as evil willow but can't resist waving to buffy like a japanese schoolgirl.

koogs, Friday, 10 May 2013 12:58 (twelve years ago)

This is an actual alternate universe though, and so shouldn't count.
