Voted "In total, more than one mug per resident, less than 10 alltogether"

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)

Oh then I noticed tea cups as an option. A tea cup can never be described as a mug. Never.

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:11 (twelve years ago)

10-20, but I always use the same mug

Camp Macaroni Style (snoball), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:14 (twelve years ago)

Possibly not, but I wanted to call it 'Mugs', so it's your call.

fwiw, I don't think we have any 'tea cups' anyway.

And my answer? 97.

(not kidding!)

Mark G, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)

In fact, that was before easter, and their 'free Double-Decker Mug with Choco Easter Egg' times six!

Mark G, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:16 (twelve years ago)

Mug:

1) a drinking cup
2) the quantity it holds
3) the face
4) the mouth
5) a thug
6) a fool
7) to pull a funny face
8) to rob
8) to study or revise
10) to photograph

in conclusion: language is ridiculous

You missed "to act in a Ben Elton sitcom"

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:27 (twelve years ago)

Oh, 7) covers that... 6) covers Elton

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:27 (twelve years ago)

2 confuses me a bit. "A mug of tea" I thought meant "a mug with tea in it", but 2 implies "an amount of tea that would fit into a mug, but the mug may or may not be present".

Camp Macaroni Style (snoball), Monday, 13 May 2013 12:24 (twelve years ago)

Maybe the tea could be frozen in the mug, then the tea could be tipped out and served to you without the mug.

Camp Macaroni Style (snoball), Monday, 13 May 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

Or some sort of tea drinking equivalent of a quart in a pint glass, a mug in a teacup

Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Monday, 13 May 2013 12:27 (twelve years ago)

Makes more sense if you think about Q: "how much tea did you drink?" A: "2 mugs" i.e. that usage doesn't imply you consumed the actual crockery

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2013 12:28 (twelve years ago)

aye like pint, litre, quart, cup.

10-20, leaning towards the topper limit. Almost all of them presents or mementos.

emil.y, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

10-20, but I always use the same mug
This describes me, but now I rotate between two different mugs. My traditional favorite, and a new gift one with famous nude portraits that are clothed until a hot liquid is poured into the mug. I have to remember not to put it in the dishwasher.

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

Is the dishwasher easily embarrassed?

We have about 20, am erring on the 10-20 side. There's only 2 of us but we are somewhat lax about washing up, I'd say we use about half of them on a regular basis.

Everyone is hard at work today I'm guessing.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

This morning, 18. Dropped one of my white Muji mugs before breakfast and now we are 17. Current mug: Walker Art Center CLOSED MONDAYS.

I live alone, all the mugs have to be a certain shape, and no fucker is allowed to drink from the VIZ comic/Human League promo mug.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

All my mugs are the same shape as well, although this is by coincidence rather than preference. They're all boring patterns that you'd see in the kitchen area of a church hall though.

go cray cray on my lobster soufflé (snoball), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

I mean, I'd love a Jet Set Willy heat reactive mug, but I know it'd get scratched or damaged somehow in fairly short order. Bland mugs seem to last longer even if I don't particularly care that they do.

go cray cray on my lobster soufflé (snoball), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

I always use the same mug

This is mine:

There's only 2 of us but we are somewhat lax about washing up

Yeah, this is us as well. We cycle through all of ours, pretty much. They're a miscellany of shapes, sizes and capacities. My favourite is probably my Prisoner mug, though I have affection for a pair of badly-dones ones for my band that I did when co-running one of those Paint-a-Pot workshops. I also have a tiny wonky one with my name on that was one of the first pots my mum made when learning to be a ceramicist.

Mark G, Monday, 13 May 2013 15:54 (twelve years ago)

I'll have to count them up at home, but my guess is that we're in the 31-50 range because we have about 3 different sets of mugs/tea cups that are used on various special occasions only.

This is my go-to mug because it is nice and large:
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=57076910

Moodles, Monday, 13 May 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

we have 10-20 but if we had a bigger kitchen we'd easily have 50. Heck I have 3 at my desk at work.

I have about 4 that I rotate through ... and 2 of them are those awesome heat-sensitive ones that have pictures/writing on them that disappears when you fill them with hot beverages.

like this one:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41NzBQuUGkL.jpg where the losers of each case disppear when you fill the mug

and this one:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41QX8AmriTL._SY450_.jpg

the Tardis one is cool because it's sort of squat and wide, and holds lot of tea/coffee. but the supreme court one is nice and heavy, I like that too.

I've been using the same mug ("Graceland, Home of Elvis") since 1989. The rest of mine are mostly pledge promo items from my community radio station. <10 altogether.

"You can never have too many mugs" is a statement that we have uttered on a number of occasions. 20 seems about right. Currently drinking from a MuseumsQuartier Wien mug with a big red camel on it.

The annual worldwide sale of mugs in 2012 generated gross revenues in excess of $20 billion, with novelty mugs accounting for $11 billion of that, as reported in the February 2013 issue of The Mug Fancier online magazine. This caps a decade with an impressive 233% growth rate in the mug industry, mainly centered in the so-called Mugworks Triangle of Guangxi province in China.

^^ I made this up and wrote it on a piece of paper, so I could quote myself on ilx.

This is a terrible survey. The class sizes are ludicrous.

In total, more than one mug per resident, less than 10 alltogether

This is like a class size for adult male height 'between 5 feet and 7 feet'. Your histogram will feature a large central block and a few nakchivan-shaped outliers. Preposterous and dare I say malignant abuse of the scientific method, Mark G

things designed for tea/coffee/etc that don't have saucers are no good

also tea/coffee cups should have a brim wider than their height, i'm not entirely sure there is an ergonomic reason but it just seems intuitively aesthetically right, the inverse principle applying to room temperature/cold drinksi

however my main abhorrence of mugs is cuz the pseudo-demotic paranoid tony blair always directed his aides to provide him with mugs rather than cups in order to appeal to c1 or c2 or whatever demographic notionally distrusts teacups

this is a species of the wider 21st c british bourgeois paranoia about 'nothing fancy' seen in the pretentiously unpretentious aesthetics of gastropubs and high end grocery stores

nakhchivan, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

Between 10 or 20, but closer to 10. Maybe 11, maybe just 10 but I didn't want to get up to count.

We have six big blue mugs that match our dishes and 4 or 5 random mugs. My favorites are a blue willow mug from a thrift store and a mug with Abraham Lincoln on it, but both of them are really stained badly by coffee so I don't like using them. We also have a mug from a local brewery and a mug featuring a picture of Jeff in third grade that I can't quite bring myself to get rid of even though we never use it. And I'm assuming we have at least one more stashed in the dusty, hard-to-reach corners of the cupboard.

carl agatha, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

Clean the mugs! Bleach or denture cleaner diluted in mug will zap any coffee or tea stains.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

I've tried bleach, denture cleaner, CLR, baking soda... nothing.

Also, in Liverpool, at least for my parents' generation, "to mug" meant to lend someone money.

Of course, they'd put the 'valuable' stuff in storage...
