i think they're pretty in real life, but there is nothing more horrible than a butterfly tattoo on the back of a tanktop-wearing fratgirl.

but i like bee tattoos.

butterflies are classic because when you watch them they don't have a plot; they always seem to be in perpetual motion towards nowhere, then the land; but there doesn't seem to be any arc or line they follow. Then one day I saw this mean looking committed buttrafly coursing across the sky from A to B!!! It was weird. Fireflies are better, but only because of John Burnside. And Geese, even better still. But I like the idea of doing a 'use other words please' with swapping 'ethereal' with 'the sound of butterfly's whirring up into an autumn haar'. Much better description for the Cocteaus.
