You know, the big purple/green/orange/etc drawing books. About the only thing that go me (for a short time) hooked into visual art stuff. idk if he has vanished into the mists for modern kids or not, but some of you all must know who i am talking about (apparently still alive at 81 btw).

anybody else get hooked on these during childhood? anybody have any idea wtf im talking about?

Alas, I had to Learn to Draw with Jon Gnagy. My parents weren't cool enough for Ed Emberley.

Those books are surprisingly good and clever! I espesh like the asides from the little creatures in the margins!

Oh yeah! I checked out the video "Squiggles, Dots, and Lines" from the library as often as my parents would let me.
This guy had a gentle, fun, egalitarian approach that is good for showing how drawing is just fun.

I could swear one of this guy's major characters was a little green tarantula with a beret? Maybe I am mixing that up with someone else – my main thing was finding cartoony "how 2 draw" books at the library and I am sure some memory wires are crossed somewhere.

See also my favorite childhood show SECRET CITY which showed you how to draw tubes and two-point perspective sci-fi cartoons:

Watching more vids of that on the youtubes I am p sure I picked up all my (small amount of) technical chops from that show at age six.

at one point i had the "draw everything" book and the halloween one, too, but that was long ago. my moms still gots a bunch of books we (my brother & sister & i) made when we were kids. my sister's is the best, because she was very small and it is consequently all messed up.

I WORSHIPPED the E.E. Green book. Like, I drew the little alien dudes with the cannonballs at the end of the book for the majority of elementary school.

The Animal one is great. My illustrator wife has always sworn by it, and we've used it with our 4-year-old daughter.
