Movies whose plots would've been solved if a character had just begun a Kickstarter (spoilers inevitable)

1. Happy Gilmore

"Help fans! My grandma is going to lose her home if I don't pay $20K (or whatever) by next month. Big money doners ($1000+) get a free round of miniature golf with happy :-) "

Plot solved.

2. The Brady Bunch sequel

This was actually the movie that made me realize how Kickstarters are, like, the greatest cheap plot device ever. Countless movies, especially comedies, have the "Character needs $$$ by xyz date or he will lose something/life will be ruined!" device. As David Bordwell pointed out: second only to a heterosexual romance, the most common movie trope is the Deadline. Characters have goals and they need to be met by a certain point. It helps you have "something at stake" (shucks I should just link us to that Syd Fields screenwriting 101 book, at this point) . it's what keeps the plot going. At any rate, In this Brady Bunch movie they needed a couple grand to save the Brady home, so they enroll in a singing competition as a family and (spoilers) they win, and the home stays in the family. Now if Marsha or Mike Brady had just run a Kickstarter I think something magical would've happened. Especially Marcia and if they played up her looks and sex appeal but perhaps that's a bit inside baseball.

Other movies where a kickstarter could've wrapped the movie up much sooner? -- btw I feel like 90s comedies could single-handedly get 20 nominations.

HOW MANY TIMES have i watched a horror film and thought, "god, just set up a kickstarter!" but now they've started getting around this by "mysteriously losing internet access" or setting the movies in an alternate universe where the only difference is kickstarter doesn't exist

Dodgeball -- Which, erm, also stars Christine Taylor (who long-time readers of the thread will remember from being in the initial post about the Brady Bunch movie). Perhaps raising money is her thing?

Iron Man - if the terrorist leader had just set up a Kickstarter to buy the weapons he wanted, he wouldn't have needed to kidnap Tony Stark to make them for him.

So you want to get rid of every film in the "Hey kids! Let's put a show!" genre, from Andy Hardy to the early hip-hop movies?

Which is not to say I disapprove of this idea....

hey you can't use kickstarter for charities/nonprofits so it's not going to be much use for saving the town rec center or whatever

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 May 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

like this:

"Help fans! My grandma is going to lose her home if I don't pay $20K (or whatever) by next month. Big money doners ($1000+) get a free round of miniature golf with happy :-) "

would not be allowed on kickstarter.

sorry for ruining the "fun"

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 May 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

I was going to point that out myself but thought I'd go along with it instead. Human Centipede would still be fine, though.

emil.y, Friday, 17 May 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

i also question whether brewster using kickstarter to spend his money in brewster's millions would have been allowed, wasn't one of the rules that he couldn't just give the money away? i guess he could argue that he's getting something out of his kickstarter purchases. maybe a loophole.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 May 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

I thought kickstarter funders generally received something back for contributing funds...?

HOW MANY TIMES have i watched a horror film and thought, "god, just set up a kickstarter!"

"Don't go to that summer camp; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"
"Don't fall asleep; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"
"Don't get chased by zombies; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"
"Don't get possessed by a demon; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"
"Don't check into that motel; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"
"Don't read that ancient tome of evil; god, just set up a Kickstarter!"

I mean maybe I'm seeing the wrong horror films

AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Friday, 17 May 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

i had forgotten that one of the parts of brewster's millions is that after the 30 days, he can't own anything new that he didn't have before the contest. so he would have to somehow get rid of his kickstarter benefits before the month was up.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 17 May 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

haha man I have forgotten a lot of that (admittedly crappy) movie (TS w/Easy Money)

At least once one of the actors will pronounce "Coven" however you want them to pronounce it.

That's the clincher.

emil.y, Friday, 17 May 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

I was hoping a superfan might have gotten it based on this:

"[Reacting to an IRS notice threatening a lien on personal property for delinquent funds due] Luckily it's just $81.00. What are they gonna take, ya know, like my "Night of the Living Dead" book?"

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Friday, 17 May 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

Haha, I've only seen it once. Nice work.

Also this incredibly pre-kickstartery quote

Mark Borchardt: Would you buy this movie for $14.95?
Friend/Musician: Yeah, hell yeah, man.
Mark Borchardt: If I can find 3,000 people like you across this country, man, I'm in business.
Friend/Musician: Of course, man, I mean... Shit, that's what "Rush" tickets were.
