What do you think is the cumulative word count of ILX?

All words, on all threads, across all the years of the site's history. For reference, Ulysses is a little over 250,000 words and it is pretty long.

there's 10 million posts, so assuming each post has at least one bona fide word, the answer is pretty trivial

oh. i didn't see those stats on the homepage. a mod can take this down if they want.

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 02:35 (twelve years ago)

maybe you could change it from word count to animated gif count

the late great, Sunday, 19 May 2013 02:39 (twelve years ago)

you could do a poll on how posts on ILX are actually worthwhile and host a good old fashioned thread of fights and sadness. those are always fun.

the gif one would be ok. a mod would need to change it, and also the options, because i doubt there is more than 500k gifs

Z S alone has posted 2.8 million animated gifs to ilx

thanks to the browse by date feature, you can read all of ilx in chronological order and pretend it's an experimental novel. I'm up to July 2006, but I'm getting increasingly fed up with all the Guess Papers and Oink invites subplots when I really just want to know whether the popists will defeat the rockists (*no spoilers please*). "read all of ilx" is on everyone else's bucket lists too, right?

unregistered, Sunday, 19 May 2013 02:57 (twelve years ago)

omg i didn't know about that feature. thanks unregistered! i think i'd rather read this than finnegans wake, which i started last year but gave up on

How many original words tho

I turned away to leave these few in thought and contemplation (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 19 May 2013 02:58 (twelve years ago)

maybe the poll should be "how many words, excluding and, if, but, is, how, the, a, an, or, and all forms of to be."

Pro-tip: don't actually do this

I turned away to leave these few in thought and contemplation (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 19 May 2013 03:03 (twelve years ago)

i'm doing it now. it seems like many of those same people who posted back then are still here, which is cool.

also, i assume that hurting 2 is hurting's son and heir, right?

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 03:06 (twelve years ago)

thanks to a weird time travel glitch, certain posts from 2006 are dated Feb. 26 2000, so you can skip ahead to August 2000 without missing any major plot points.

unregistered, Sunday, 19 May 2013 03:08 (twelve years ago)

that one weird trick for saving twenty minutes of a decade-long archival research project that the mods don't want you to know about

Michigan seems like a dream to me now (Treeship), Sunday, 19 May 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)

one of the hardest parts is keeping track of Pappawheelies I through VIII. it helps to sketch out a family tree. too bad ILX The Novel doesn't have any maps or genealogical tables in the front matter.

i am going to pitch this as an ebook to all the major publishing houses btw

in the bestselling ebook version (i don't think it's possible to make a print copy tbh) i am going to insert my name earlier on, and credit myself with all of the most brilliant posts. fair warning.

I don't care what you do as long as you credit it to "Ned Raggett et al." and send me a generous 0.05% of the royalties.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 24 May 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

My last 10 posts average about 50 words each. 14,000 posts x 50 words = 700,000 from me...conservatively, knock that down to 500,000. Right now, I'm .00129 of all ILX posts ever--between 1/10 and 2/10 of one percent. 500,000/.00129 = 387,596,899. So about 400 million words.
