email hacked advice

hey someone just emailed me saying theyre getting spammy email from me and forwarded the email which was sent w my name but not from my account, i use an adress book i just rely on the recent addresses pop up list that comes up when you start typing so im sure how some sort of bot couldve gotten the adress i guess by just looking at my emails, not sure how to ficgure out if it got into my gmail or my iphone or maybe via like a twitter app? wtfffff

prob one of the people you email got hacked, youre in their address book, and the bot is just spoofing the email header w/ your name?

yeah im wondering if thats the case, i axed on facebook and so far no one else is reporting anything

this is a version of events that happened to me (getting emails from ppl who thought it was i who was hacked when i was totes not), but that was about ten years ago and maybe email hackery has progressed since then.

you could look at the 'recent account activity' thing linked at the v bottom of your gmail inbox and see if anything suspicious turns up there.

i remember back in the 90s when there were websites that spoofed email headers and you could send people emails from billga✧✧✧@micros✧✧✧.c✧✧, ah those were the days

actually, there was an attempted hack on my gmail recently

- but google blocked the attempt as they noticed the country of origin of the access was not the usual country ..

so they locked the account, and sent me a txt to advise of the situation and how to get back into it.

quite impressive i thought.

Curious. Trying to log onto my email account started giving the response "Password not recognised".

Going to the app associated with the same organisation, I couldn't access this either and trying to log-in required a two-factor authenticator which gave the option of sending a code to an email or phone number that aren't mine.

Two hours plus in communication with the provider hasn't got me back into my account (though they assure me no-one else can either).

Full of horror, to be honest.

I confess I could have lost it a bit when they couldn't/wouldn't tell me if someone had changed my password/contact details this afternoon.

try to salvage all the accounts that you still have access to by resetting to secure passwords and enabling 2FA.

When I got locked out of FB a few years ago, I set up two-step with a friend, requiring codes be sent to him that he'd relay via email. I had to do it probably six or seven times over the next few years (no longer, they provide recovery codes you can download), apologetic every time. But it felt safe and it worked.

Checked that link--I've only been involved in 16 data breaches, no big deal.

It's a strange, horrible feeling.
