the trailer for this got a genuine 'what the shit' reaction from me
my friend says that the proper way to see this is as the prequel to castaway

1) looks good
2) Greengrass
3) not Harrison Ford!

Based on a true story! Besides, Somali pirate pretty much requires adherence to certain archetypes.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)
that looks kind of awesome

Really? To me this is a prime example of a trailer that gives away way too much. In fact, it tells the whole story of the film, apart from presumably the 'happy end' (some die, Hanks lives). The End.

his accent in this trailer o_O

He's always been really bad at accents, imo.

He did a pretty good Krakozhian accent.
― Huston we got chicken lol (Phil D.), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 00:40 (twelve years ago)
Could be alright, very Greengrassy subject matter.

NYTimes:
The existential realities that inform contemporary Somali piracy turn out to be one of the unexpected themes of “Captain Phillips,” which begins as something of a procedural about men at work and morphs into a jittery thriller even as it also deepens, brilliantly, unexpectedly, into an unsettling look at global capitalism and American privilege and power.

Solid Danish film based on a similar but different event, coming to DVD next Tuesday:

Matusumunyane’s film, “The Smiling Pirate,” poses a direct challenge to the problematic representation of the Somali Pirates in the film Captain Phillips and aims to do something Hollywood has thus far been afraid to do: give a Muse and others in Somalia a genuine voice to tell their side of the story.

A rather thoughtful critic was unimpressed:
Someone made the point that it smartly doesn’t set up any obvious signifiers, except that it doesn’t set up much of anything, so the half-assed lip service that these kids have to do this to survive, but that desperation is only talked about, not really shown.

But, there was a prologue to Castaway!

Saw a preview last weekend, thought it was great. Started a thread not having seen this one.
Saw this last night. Greengrass playing to his strengths of action, empathy, and zero magic.

I can see where this review's coming from, but I'd pick Greengrass telling this story over Oliver Stone any day. Also went into it not remembering the basics of what had happened, and the unpredictability helped.

Does it address the suggestion that the kidnapping was largely his fault in the first place (a bunch of the crew sued him after the rescue, I think)? Looks interesting.

Good film. Unexpected shades of Dog Day Afternoon on a lifeboat during the last half.
