Dear sacred friends,
If I may be allowed such allusion, among the many who have held sway, I think no other can be found whose service has been attended with the ardour and emulation shown for that of you at present. The inducement is evident and powerful: men do not pursue together the same career without motive, and strangers are observed to strive with those who are equally impelled perhaps by religion, loyalty, prejudice, or empiricism.
I have written this with much exactness, and although in it may be read things very novel and for some persons difficult to believe, nevertheless they may without hesitation credit me as strictly faithful. Better than to exaggerate, I have lessened in all things, and it is sufficient to say the relation is offered to everyone of you, a Majesty for the truth, if the extended metaphor is permissible. My expedition to reality may indubitably be received in the name of homage, since it is the most that one could bring who returned thence naked.
Therefore I ask, what does such disparity between ILX and its circumscribed pith from each subject divulge that is germane to each person's comportment in and outside of this purlieu?
To illustrate: postulating it a cardinal, do you conceive of ILX as a fallaciously composed Roman numeral, manifesting itself in the social, ethical, and moral nature of its subjects? I await your reply.
Such is what befell me, most noteworthy, in this my first voyage.

God! What am I doing here? In this land! In this world! God! What am I doing here?

Don’t you consider that you take up more room with that carcass than any five here? Is not the place as free for us as for you? Bring your own guts to a reasonable compass, and then I’ll engage we shall have room enough for us all. It has taken me some time, but I have learned that I’m a part of everyone, and everyone is a part of me. And that no matter where I go or how I go, everyone goes with me. But we must give reformism credit for succeeding where Bonaparte had failed, in dissolving becoming in eternity and reality in illusion; this union may not be as solid as the sacraments of religious marriage, but it is lasting, which is the most the managers of coexistence and social peace can ask of it.

Nine and fifty? Forsooth, merest babe-in-arms, cod-slippet!
To th' meat: with ILX hath no man a house of good stone, nor painted paradise on his church wall. With ILX
seeth no man Gonzaga his heirs and his concubines, no picture is made to endure nor to live with but it is made to mock and mock quickly. With ILX stonecutter is kept from his stone and weaver from his loom, and wool comes not to market nor sheep bringeth no gain. For ILX is a murrain, and blunteth the needle in the maid’s hand, and stoppeth the spinner’s cunning. ILX rusteth the chisel, it rusteth the craft and the craftsman, it gnaweth the thread in the loom. None learneth to weave gold in her pattern; azure hath a canker by ILX; cramoisi is unbroidered, emerald findeth no Memling. For ILX slayeth the child in the womb, as OKCupid stayeth the young man’s courting. It hath brought palsey to bed, and lyeth between the young bride and her bridegroom.
This I have learned from the squirrels, who conclude most earnestly: CONTRA NATURAM.

But neither did I then think that I ought, for the sake of avoiding danger, to do anything unworthy of an ILXor, nor do I now repent of having so defended myself; but I should much rather choose to die having so defended myself than to live in that way. For neither in a trial nor in battle is it right that I or any other ILXor should employ every possible means whereby he may avoid death; for in battle it is frequently evident that a man might escape death by laying down his arms and throwing himself on the mercy of his pursuers. And there are many other devices in every danger, by which to avoid death, if a man dares to do and say everything.
