lol is the one that probably belongs in the MoMA's design collection for its elegant simplicity, in spite of overuse

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think "lol" has been used so much that it has passed the point of being a cliche and is basically just a word now so i don't really worry about overusing it. orwell wrote about this phenomenon -- not in the case of "lol" obviously -- but i can't locate the quote.

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

ha ha. even more when shortened to just ha which expresses a lot better the actual feeling for something funny on the internet, just a quick ha! and then on to the next thing

Lol is great & I can't see why anyone would dislike it unless they hate words & laughter

sjuttiosju_u (wins), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 06:05 (eleven years ago) link

Although I suspect a lot of lol-haters are dorks who still read it as "ell oh ell"

dimension nickröss (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 09:18 (eleven years ago) link

also, and I'm just gonna throw this out there, what is it about the acronym that marks the user out as lowbrow in a way that lol and lmao doesn't

dimension nickröss (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 09:19 (eleven years ago) link

lol

Treeship, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

As far as acronyms go, "lol" is the only one I use. I like the concrete-poetic aspect of it, in that the "o" could represent an opened, laughing mouth. The word just plain looks funny on the screen. (I still find it jarring on the increasing occasions when I see the word in print on actual paper.)

It's funny, just yesterday I was reminiscing about the time a favourite aunt tried to pass "TEEHEE" as a word in Scrabble.

The Thai version of lol in a text conversation. "5" in Thai is pronounced "ha".

Treeship, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

would vote hahaha or some variant if it wasn't in all caps which looks godawful, so LOL i guess. ROTFL back in the day, though. That one has that great quality of internet speak in the days before anybody would ever say stuff out loud (see google glass thread) where it doesn't matter that it's really unnatural to say it out loud and looks kind of ugly and awkward on the screen and that's just how it is cause you're using some POS Usenet client and nothing looks good anyway. Always associated it with ROT13 for that reason.

(BTW - I was at a blog the other day that actually still uses ROT13 to avoid spoilers, both by the blogger and by the regular comment crew. Had no idea anybody still used that!)
