How tall are you?

Just curious....

Okay, really - I just wanna know how many people I'm taller than. I'm only 5'7", but it's astonishing how many heads I can see over when I walk down the street, especially when I've got heels on.

Kerry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6'0''. Hint - with all men except me, take off an inch or two. Seriously, this phenomenon has been proved by science.

Nick, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm about 6'1"...but I have a similar posture to Shaggy (scobby doo), so I lose an inch or two.

ll jel, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6'2", eyes of blue, Billy Dods is after you. Or perhaps not.

Billy Dods, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6' and fuck you greenspun for not letting me just post that.

Josh, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm short, 5"6 or so..

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick shall be taken out back and be beaten for making me feel shorter than I already am. If you *dare* to take an inch or two off of my already short 5'7", there's gonna be a full-on war. Napolean ain't got SHIT on me, brah.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hint - with all men except me, take off an inch or two. Seriously, this phenomenon has been proved by science.

LOL. A couple of weeks ago, my boss and another guy were trying to figure out the height of some shelves, and I overheard him telling this much shorter man (like, 5-4), "well I'm 6-1" and no *way* is he that tall - 5'11" at best. Like he would pull that crap with anyone who approaches 6'. I was rolling my eyes behind his back - "I'm 6'1, little shorty man - eat *that*". Then this other guy from work had a personals ad up some time ago, and he also said he was 6-1, and he's *not*, either.

I measured myself, tho, and I really am 5'7".

Kerry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'4", or under Nick's system (or if I've grown), 5'5".

Graham, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'9". I have my own version of Dastoor's Theorem: any woman who claims to be tall is at least an inch shorter than she says she is. I have known sooo many women claiming to be 5'9" or 5'10" who are noticeably shorter than me.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once got measured as 6'0" and have given my height as 6'0" ever since but I think I'm nearer 5'11". On the other hand Isabel is 5'10" and I'm definitely taller than her by more than an inch...UNLESS SHE HAS BEEN LYING TO ME ALL THESE YEARS.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm 5'10". Possibly 5'11".

I was so happy when I was able to reach the top shelves of my mom's cabinets with out actually climbing onto the kitchen counter. Next week, I'm making an attack on the secret candy stash above the fridge!

Infantile? Me? Goo goo goo.

David Raposa, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm 5'8. Really. No lies, no anything. I actually thought I was 5'7 or 5'6 for a long time, but that was becaues my then-boyfriend was lying and claiming himself shorter than he actually was.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dan, you can't be shorter than me...can you?

for all of those expecting a lumbering BEAST, i'm sorry to disappoint -- 5'8.5". 130 pounds (a bonus!), forestalling a "how much do you weigh?" post.

fred solinger, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No points to anyone saying "Now there's irony" right now.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a little under 2 meters . David is a liltle above a metyer and a half.

anthony, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not only is it possible, but it's TRUE *sob*.

I had a brief claim on 5'8", but then I realized it was my super-thick Doc Martens. I now HATE wearing shoes that have soles thinner than 1 inch.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you want irony? look in the internet romance thread! now THAT'S irony.

fred solinger, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's nothing like irony, unless you're Alanis Morrisette.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Five feet, nine and three quarter inches in stockinged feet. Taller than Nick in my highest heels though.

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarification: when I wear my highest heels I am taller than Nick.

Madchen, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the irony here is that i really am alanis morrissette. which makes me 6'5" even.

fred solinger, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You're a silly, silly man and you are talking bollocks. You probably have heat stress. It makes you confused, ask Otis.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, no heat stroke, though i do have this rash. on both of my forearms. i think it's from the sunblock. which is what i get for buying sunblock from australia. (australia: classic or dud? defend yourself, finney!) like birth control and underwear, sunblock, i've learned, is not something you should buy from the 99c store, no matter how appealing the offer.

fred solinger, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*rolls eyes* No, I meant heat stress, it's the newest diagnosis, it was on the news and everything. Anyone who buys anything at a 99c store deserves anything they get, because really there's a reason why things cost under a dollar, any sensible person knows that.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'6" at most and I have never gazed down at a grown man ...

Robin Carmody, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'4 and all boyfriends have been significantly taller, but then I do love Stick Man. I blame formative Peter O'Toole crush, as Bowie short.

suzy, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, i wasn't correcting you (!), rather for some reason i thought you'd said "heat stroke." mainly because i'd never heard of "heat stress." the similarity between the two can't be dismissed, at least in terms of spelling.

fred solinger, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now do you think that if I said "I was stressed" and someone else said "I had a stroke", anyone would get confused?

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6'5" and beautiful

Mike Hanley, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

From my experiences, and now validated somewhat by Suzy, it seems that many art school girls are rather petite. This = good for me (short art school guy). Unless, of course, Suzy has monstrously tall art school friends.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They are all skinny little rakes, I'll tell you that much. Most art people are really skinny, with a smattering of rotund people. However, there are very few strapping mesomorphs such as myself. I just feel like German Opera Woman at school. And I can't wear the sorts of clothes that other art chicks wear.

Is there an art school diet or something?

Kerry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy Can't have me. I am too tall

Mike Hanley, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm about 5'3". Maybe a bit taller.

Melissa W, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm 5'8" and full of man-beef.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taller than 5'3, shorter than 5'4. I'm tired of being tiny. I must admit that despite initially thinking they were ridiculous crap, in the end, I did thoroughly enjoyed the platform shoe trends of the last few years, as I finally got to see the top of the fridge.

Kim, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like both what this thread started as and what it became.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amending Nick's rule, I say add one inch to his height and leave all others the same. I thought I was 6' but am actually smaller then him. Perhaps 5'11". He cheats when he puts on The Madchen's highest heels though. Next time we end all up in the pub together, can someone bring a measuring tape?

Ally C, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5' 1.5". I round up to 5'2".

Lyra, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5 foot seven inches tall, I are being.

DG, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get around this 'add-an-inch' business by endearingly adding just half that. I'm so quirky.

I know I can't get away with claiming 5'6", because I've *met* Adrian Heath and there was no identity confusion. But I'm sure I left 5'5" behind in my late teens. I've done some stretching since then. 5'5.5" it is, then.

Michael Jones, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cripes - I've just realised that Dastoor said '*take off* an inch or two'. I read it as 'add' because, well, what Nick actually wrote seems so absurd.

It really is a different world being tall, isn't it?

Michael Jones, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I use the metric system: 166 cm.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Am I the tallest girl at 5'10"?

marianna, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am 5'5" but at work I am about 2 inches taller due to heels. When in my denim wedges I am about 6 foot.

Emma, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am 5"2. I have been called petite! Occasionally I look in the Petite section of Topshop but then have to go into normal sizes as Petite = Also Extremely Skinny And Not Just Small - you bastards.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5'22 and A HALF - and that half is very important. I too shop in the petite section of Next. Ladies jeans are the only ones which fit me.

Pete, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael - I meant 'take off an inch or two' from what they claim to get the real height. Or am I misunderstanding you?

One thing none of us have considered is that there's up to an inch (this amount has been invented by me and not proved my science) difference between one's height in the morning and that which you end the day with. This is because your spine stretches out in bed, or in exeptional circumstances, because during the day someone has cut your feet off.

Nick, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesuschrist... I mis-read Nick's opening message in two different ways. I really must start READING ALL THE WORDS. So, I was right the first time. But also wrong.

Would sleeping upside-down like Uncle Fester give you an extra two inches?
