Couldn't find any talk about this anywhere. I love the book, so I'm in. Could this work? Could soderbergh and dude from gbv pull it off?

Can't believe I'm living in a world where both Pynchon AND Barth are getting filmed.

Although barth has been filmed before (the end if the road, which by all accounts is terrible)

*of
I am reading the book now finally
the accounts of colonial intrigue are so comically abstruse and knotty that it feels like some kind of perverse challenge

what are ppl's thoughts about the book? at the time i'm told it was on like EVERY undergrad bookshelf in the land, barth was a cult icon, the great american novel had been written, and since then it's just vanished from the national memory

It's so hard to imagine a time in American culture like that tbrr... I read it when I was a lonely 19 year old seeking solace in art and it was great but if I tried now my head would probably explode. I would like to see the book Giles goat boy adapted into a final fantasy esque video game rather than this book adapted into anything but both seem equally unlikely to actually happen...

I started this thread?
I still love this book, am not up for this adaptation ever happening at all
― jaggered little poll (wins), Friday, 5 February 2016 06:49 (ten years ago)
I'm only like 200 pages into it (!) and there is little to zero actual filmable things that happen in it. It almost entirely comprises stories told to Eben, and often stories within stories. I guess you could do these as flashbacks or something but that seems like it might be kinda lame.

That makes it sound like Melmoth The Wanderer, which totally should be filmed even though it's uh sectarian provocation
― artsvashen (imago), Friday, 5 February 2016 16:44 (ten years ago)
actually quite a bit more real-time action now, the ocean crossing, the pirates, the natives and the colonists, the quadruple-crosses at malden
this book is stupendously written, stupendously conceived, fiendishly knotty, filthy and hilarious

Is this out of print in the UK at the moment?
