kinda feel bad sometimes that i have never, in my 44 years, known my dad off of valium. like, i wonder what he would have been like without it. i do think it has taken its toll on his brain.

I take Ativan. Ordinarily I only take it when I fly or am under extreme stress which means maybe a couple times a month if that. However, over the past couple months I developed a pretty severe panic disorder in which I was having at least 3 full-blown panic attacks a week (sometimes more) for about 2.5 months. It was horrible. The only thing that would stop them was Ativan and I don't know how I would have gotten through those months without it. I was still never taking more than 3mg a day and not even every day. I'm back to only using it when I absolutely have to which right now amounts to a couple times a week.

i'm kinda similar to my dad in a lot of ways - was a heavy drinker for years like him - and i've always used nicotine as my panic reducer and whenever i try to quit smoking i freak out and get depressed and i wonder if i should go to the docter and get something to replace cigarettes, but then i worry about the thing i might take instead. i don't want to go through the trial and error pill thing really. but i know what i was like before i started smoking and it wasn't pretty. so i kinda feel like i might need something...
gum. i'll just try the gum again...

guess that should have been on the stop smoking thread. sorry.
I was on Ativan/Lorazepam for a year. live-saver at first.. anxiety gone, could handle anything. then exhausted/sleepy all the time but still cool. then life became a constant grey meh, didnt feel bad but couldnt really feel glad. apathetic and pacified... was able to kick them w/o withdrawal, which I read could be horrendous, but then didn't over-use/abuse them either.

tried xanax and klonopin, but my body just coverted it into fun chemicals, so i pretty much stay away from that stuff.

iirc benzos are the only other substance besides alcohol from which withdrawal can be fatal

i have a stomach disorder and suffer from chronic nausea, which i self-medicated with lots of pot for about four years before i was prescribed .5mg lorazepam (the only anti-emetic benzodiazepine). luckily they don't make me feel "high," just numbed, so luckily i haven't abused them for their own sake and am not inclined to do so. but taking a low dose, between .5mg and 1.5 mg every day for even a few months, has definitely left me dependent and the withdrawal is pretty horrible, i mean aside from the claustrophobic racing thoughts, lorazepam withdrawal makes your muscles ache, no appetite, gastrointestinal issues, and the most uncomfortable of all, the tightness in the chest, constantly elevated heart rate, and the absolute inability to sleep. i can attest to what scott said. this shit definitely vegetates you after long enough, so i want to get the fuck off taking it every day, but as an escape button, they're enormously helpful...

This is interesting. I was taking at least 1mg of it in March April and at least 1/2 of May and didn't experience any of these things. I have been having trouble sleeping lately but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm drinking too much caffeine. I don't know, maybe 2.5 months of regular lose wasn't long enough for me to get to a place where I'd experience withdrawal.
