If someone introduced themselves as Steve, would you immediately think "this guy is called Steve"?

no, i think i would think he was called steve (but it would depend, for example, he might have a nametag on that said 'ryan' or 'freddie', in which case i wouldn't be sure if i was dealing with some kind of joker)

you see this is actually a question about how good you are about remembering people's names.

Barely relevant, but always worth retelling. Twenty+ years ago I was starting a comic fanzine. I wrote to a bunch of people who did good things in fanzines. One who wrote back was Steve W-. We arranged to meet. How will I recognise you? He told me he was 6'3, with brown hair, full beard and moustache. He'd be wearing jeans, boots, and a white chunky-knit sweater. He'd be in this small pub at noon, with a bag of comics. So I turn up, and there is someone who fits the description in every detail. "Hello," I say. "Are you Steve W-?" "Ah, you must be Martin Skidmore," he says. I say "I'm pleased I found you, Steve." He says "Oh, I'm not Steve W-." The most disorienting moment of my life! He was a friend of Steve's who happened to fit the description - and I had also written to him, so he was interested in meeting me too. (And it was through Steve, still a friend today, that I met Andrew L, as it happens.)
