My score is shitty for this one so I expect a trouncing from other ilxors, I'm particularly interested to see if anyone gets number 3 spot on.

The only thing I'm learning from this game is that EVERYWHERE is nicer than where I live.

Ste, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 08:33 (twelve years ago)

better than mine, I got 11785:

9057. very impressive. what protocol are you using? i used "allowed to spin around, not allowed to move."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

I'm using moving & googling any visible road signs/shops etc. Anything's fair game really, and well done if you can get anything out of the interminable stretches of landmark-free road.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

i will spin but not move

12060 on the first one

not sure what the ruined monastery/abbey etc is

Šite New Answers (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

ive never bothered searching roadsigns &c

Šite New Answers (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:49 (twelve years ago)

hmm really thought some of you were going to nail these ones.

With Ailsa. I move a lot, I constantly look for signs that will give me a hint. Unfortunately most are illegible. Big rivers can help, if you already have an inkling as to what country its in.

Don't know how I got so close to that last one though, think it was pure luck.

Looks like there are challenges with time limits, which I guess prevents people from moving too much.

Ste, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

I got spot on with the first one, well, within 1km on the first one of the first one, because I walked around, found a library, and googled it. Enterprising! Then I gave up after being a gazillion miles out on the second one.

I went back and zoomed in on the answer to the monastery/abbey thing and then googled stuff about the place where it was, and now I have learned something.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

25318 on the first one (no googling, just moving around)

i usually aim for something in the 11000s, ok with that. Top scores have reached 17k+ a couple times, I don't think i'll ever top 20 though!

I've noticed a few things in Australia look very American, but if you blow your guess you get dinged BIG.

My high so far is 13,000-something, and that's only because I lucked out with some signage I could google.

― Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, July 5

how on earth could you done better??? I've topped 17k a couple of times but its needed me to get 2 of the 5 within 20 miles or so, i'm super happy with a 17k+ score but could never have managed it with those 5, the 2 you got close were insane - especially the one in canada, did you recognize it or something?

suare, Friday, 5 July 2013 07:41 (twelve years ago)

no, i cheated, basically. "drove" around endlessly googling place/street/business names. australia killed me cuz there was a route 1 on both coasts, and i missed manga creek in the philippines vs colorado cuz i got lazy and guessed.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, 5 July 2013 12:18 (twelve years ago)

in canada, i found a business i could place exactly, in okinawa a highway intersection

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, 5 July 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

Oh I feel better now - I thought I had good game at this and have reached that score a couple times but those 5 were a tough bunch, I doubt I would have broke 10k for those

suare, Friday, 5 July 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

can't imagine i'd break 10,000 just staying in place and straight guessing. even driving around, my score would have been possible without google assistance, but not likely.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, 5 July 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

just ran a second round, w minimal driving and no google allowed. did pretty well, almost 10000. http://url.geoguessr.com/3dPV. but yeah, it's much harder this way.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, 5 July 2013 13:10 (twelve years ago)

I got 9455 for that one (had to cover the screen to get the challenge link)

the 3rd one in that was super hard - they were all hard in that one actually, got the first two pretty near but collapsed after that. hate getting <10K :(

suare, Friday, 5 July 2013 13:20 (twelve years ago)

duh, i just figured out that it makes more sense to post the challenge than my results. live and learn.

woot! did very damn well on the last challenge suare posted: 19165. i allowed myself to drive, but not far. two i was able to place almost exactly, as i could identify and locate the towns. one nearly blind guess in a vast area came in only 41k off. score

― Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Friday, 5 July 2013

its good though - sure you get some low scores along the way but you start realizing you know more than you think you do - cues like soil colour, tree type, road markings

The worst for me are when you can see a roadsign for a highway or town but don't recognize it or know where it is, so it doesnt actually help you at all

suare, Friday, 5 July 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

with plenty of driving/googling, i got 32384 on the challenge vt captchas posted yesterday, missing the high score by nine points. got 'em all right, but wasn't quite precise enough in my pin placement :(

enjoy both approaches to the game, blind guess from starting spot and exploratory research, though the latter ultimately comes down to time invested + to-the-millimeter exactitude. less room for luck & surprise.
