I Am Never Going To Find A Job.

seriously, i have never encountered any (suburban) area as economically depressed as the greater thurston county area. the classifieds page in sunday's olympian was literally 2 pages (like, a front and a back.) no one advertises, anyway; the whole place seems to operate under some revolving door policy of ultra-nepotism. (either that, or your parole officer will help you out.) i seem to have picked the worst place in america (at the worst time!) to try to start over. it's even worse since my experience is so focused (outside of writing, it's all sales/retail management.)

anyway, this is mostly just a self-serving desperate thread in order to see if anyone has any freelance contacts they could pass on to me. (some people have actually already go into contact with me, but their proposals - while helpful! - aren't going to stave off my creditors for long.)

new keep-me-out-of-jail answers.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

also, every employment agency seems to have some insane/inane fee. how the fuck can i pay a fee when i don't have a job you motherfuckers?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

also, not having a car really hampers my radius. i'm easily 45 - by bus - minutes away from any "major urban center."

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

woah, that sucks dude, having to pay employment agencies WTF?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

well, they're scams, obv. there's a few legit ones, but they're very snooty, standoffish, and backlogged.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

word this jobless shit sux

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

haha also, if you want an idea how bad it is here, nancy works in the career development center at evergreen.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm assuming that Monster.com is hopeless...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

it really has been so far. i mean, i've been sending out resumes to things i might have a SLIM chance of getting, but i need some office supply or college bookstore to open, stat haha.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

if it's anyconsolation Jess I'm in exactly the same boat.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it is, actually. none of this would be all that pressing without the mounting debt; they haven't sent me any letters in a month now, and that's never a good sign.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The grossly ironic thing about being in an employer's market is that the best candidates less often get hired, because the skills needed to look for a job are mutually exclusive from those usually needed for the qualifications itself. That, and nepotism is rampant.
I'm also having to deal with this firsthand myself.

Jess, my only advice, assuming you don't know too many people in the area, is to ask Nancy to see if she knows anybody that can get you a position.. but I'm sure you've done that already.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, have you looked for things like waiting tables/bartending/various service industry jobs? Bartending in particular can be very lucrative, esp. for part-time work. (I'm about to answer an ad for unskilled bartenders which, if all goes well, will result in me pulling in an extra $300/week in tips and wages.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

as I said elsewhere, the London Temp market has apparently bottomed out. I'm being told that, if they can find me jobs ahead of the hundreds already on their books, they will only pay less than whatI was on six years ago when I had no experience whatsoever! The only advice I can give ois to sign up with agencies who deal specifically with jobs matching your talents. I've done this and have had morethings from one company than with all others combined. May well have an interview on Thursday with a very bigcompany.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe i should just sell my body to science.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

will you get much?

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, not in this condition!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure, if science is a horde of screaming girls, and Jess is the sexy bitch we all knew he was.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

if you do, letme know Jess and I'll offerthem my porky body. Hopefully they'll pay by the pound.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

just like the ground round when i was little!

aw, brian, bless.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

jess go to a publisher and say you will do proof-reading work free-lance. they are almost always looking for people who can not only read but have at least half a brain, they pay well and its 'in your own time' work.
worth a try anyway.
good luck.

donna (donna), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian again proves his worth. :-) Beyond best wishes, I wish I could offer more help. :-( Maybe you could be a bounty hunter rounding up emo people with Vulcan haircuts. Or more seriously, something at the university? Or has that option been thoroughly explored?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Here are my monster stats: 82 jobs applied to, 31 resume views, 0 job offers. I did get one interview through hotjobs. Online job searching is great for making you feel like you're doing something productive, but really, you're not.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought that, now I have landed a 200 English pound per day job. More power to me.

Lynskey, Monday, 30 September 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a good thing there's an ocean seperating us.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

With me being in the area that's pretty much the East Cost equivalent, right outside of Hamshire College, there are 3 major Job types

1. Drug Dealing- not reccomended. Once you run out there's no money and if Evergreen is really like Hamshire it will get dry pretty fast.

2. Service industry wait tables/bar tending-if you can fake it you can make it. How difficult is mixing a Bloody Mary???

3. Telephone surveying- Yes I know it sucks when they call during dinner or sex but the jobs that are somewhat stable for unskilled labor and don't have people smelling like a grease pit . I've done this for a while and its really not that bad...okay I don't have to ask do you want fries with that but where else am I gonna get a job that pays over $11/hour that I can do with my eyes closed??

Beats selling all your records on E-Bay :)

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

(either that, or your parole officer will help you out.)

This could be kind of tricky, but could you commit some sort of crime for which you're reasonably sure of getting probation, and then ask the probation officer for help finding work?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What jess said, except with all my sale-able possessions on a different landmass.
