Huh. Guess we never talked about the original film at the time. Anyway, sequel's out, huge hit, minions, etc.

I watched the first one this weekend. A bit of a mess as a whole, but has many, many wonderful moments and a few great sequences.

The trailers for the first one were attached to every movie I saw with my kid for like 2 years. Neither of us ever were inclined to see it.

I watched the first one a year or so ago, maybe longer. I liked it, but I have no plans to see the sequel in the theater.

I saw the first one the other day and it was just ... there. A non-entity. I had trouble paying attention. I believe they added the little tic-tacs at the last minute because otherwise it had nothing going for it all. This one ... it's no coincidence that the marketing is all the yellow guys.

They're like the penguins in the zoo animal movies.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 July 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)

Nah, the minions played a huge part in the marketing of the first one too.

The "minions" were clearly designed to be the attraction to the movie. Their function follows the lead of the aliens from Toy Story, then the seagulls from Finding Nemo- and mixed with the squirrel from Ice Age.

They also were, imo, clearly created to be the merchandising powerhouse they proved to be without slowing down at all since the first one.

No, I mean I think they were a last minute addition to the first movie. The movie was basically made, and then the minions were added.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 8 July 2013 21:25 (twelve years ago)

I'm saying I think the opposite is true, or at least if your theory is right they still shifted overwhelming emphasis to the minions as the primary draw and merchandising focus.

Evan, Monday, 8 July 2013 22:26 (twelve years ago)

Oh yeah the penguins too. I glazed over that post.

the first one is nowhere near a complete movie but something about a lot of it just makes me laugh my ass off, and the minions are hilar

my favorite thing about the first one (which I loved btw)

They really do ladle the minions on whenever it loses its way, which is pretty much all the time. It was mostly fun spyjinks stuff except, right - they have the magic formula that turns things into violent destructive uncontrollable maniacs. And (spoilers) pretty much all of the minions get hit with it, and so we get to see the effects in aggregate. Giving them all stage-psychotic switching and blinking is a bit of an odd decision - giving them all straggly african hair (except purple, because they're purple when they're maniacs) is kind of mind boggling.

one year passes...

every minions preview i've seen makes me laugh out loud.

surely the whole film cannot keep up that level of enjoyment ?

The more previews I see for the Minions movie the more I worry that I've seen all the funny parts. I love the Ice Age squirrel, but an entire movie with the main characters not speaking may be a bit of a stretch. I also feel that with the amount of Minions merchandise I've purchased it would be a bit sad if I don't enjoy the movie. More sad than spending money on Minions products that is.
