voting for "Defying Gravity"

the SI unit of ignorance (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

At least 60 percent of those options are unknown to me.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 14:32 (twelve years ago)

just makes me glad they don't love me

For the record, I'm 5 at best out of these. Just wanted to point out that millennial gays also love weak parody.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

Am I allowed to vote? Because: WINE.

emil.y, Tuesday, 9 July 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

A vote for anything other than wine is wrong.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 July 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

I presume growing up with the last 20 years of SNL makes that true across the Kinsey scale.

I keep forgetting if i'm a millennial or a gen x'er (b. 1978).

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 00:10 (twelve years ago)

you are meaningless

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

I always suspected as much.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

Missed being a millennial by about five months. I spent those five months really soaking in the last bit of Gen X culture.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:12 (twelve years ago)

Is there a classification for those of us who fall just in between Gen X (which I always assumed was just *slightly* older than me) and Millennials?

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

Poop stains.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

nm, my bf (b. 1979) just informed me that we're gen x.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:18 (twelve years ago)

just want to thank millenial gays for voguing

balls, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)

Glee and Real Housewives (and probably Wicked, I'm guessing) make me happy not to be a millennial gay.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)

Yes, voguing. Tank tops are awesome too. I didn't know they were a millennial thing, are people from horrible gen x allowed to use those?

man. pero man. man man man (wolves lacan), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

more like "things lamestreamer millenial gays love" harrumphed the gen x-er

I mean, Logo TV and "parades", really? really?

the tune was space, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)

one mention of Wicked was bad enough, but then ...

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

if I'm squaring this with the actual millenial gays I know, it's missing: Golden Girls, Le1f, MikeQ, beards, queer theory, trap and kombucha

the tune was space, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

If rampant stereotyping offends you, you probably don’t want to read this. My boyfriend (gay) and I (also gay) made it. It’s fun; don’t over think it!

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:55 (twelve years ago)

My boyfriend (gay) and I (also gay)

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

(gay) (also gay)

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

just some harmless rampant stereotyping, just accept it & don't think critically about the kyriarchy

crüt, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

was gay (not was gay)

Rothko's Chicken and Waffles (donna rouge), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

can i vote for 'not overthinking things'

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:04 (twelve years ago)

Don't overthing your vote.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

Or overthink it, even.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

nm, my bf (b. 1979) just informed me that we're gen x.

But we're definitely not who Douglas Coupland was writing about in 1991.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago)

OK, we fit by a number of these definitions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_X

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 17:54 (twelve years ago)

We're def the very tail end of Gen X. The generation that kinda hates Gen X.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

welcome to the club that wouldn't be a member of itself!

self hatred is *very* Gen-X

millenials, in my experience, are way less into the language of guilt and shame- for Gen X I think the focus on being "transgressive" and the lingering angst about authenticity discourse / "selling out" vs "keeping it real" etc. and the whole focus on melancholia, abjection and failure throughout the gen X era (surely a political symptom) means that some sort of self-hatred is just part of the deal- millenials don't seem as attached to that way of carving up the world (there are things they like and things they don't like, but it doesn't seem hung up on what is real and what is fake to the extent that the previous generation spent a lot of energy doing that)

insert generalization about how the flattening of the web and the ease of access to culture / information / community and the central ascendance of social media mean that millenials are more upfront in how they carry their narcissism- i.e. gen X-ers were all about the wounded ego and slacking as a pre-emptive pullout from competition (a "you can't fire me cuz I quit" gesture)- millenials grew up watching their own popularity and self-worth being externally quantified through Facebook likes and friend lists and follower numbers and so their egos are more prosthetically enhanced but also more up for grabs / at-sea. Maybe each generation gets its own flavor of despair?

the tune was space, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)

I am a millennial and am all about self-hatred

anyway "millenial" and "generation x" are really lazy reductive ways of looking at how humanity is reorganizing & the reactions of certain groups of people to changes in the human environment

crüt, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

Millennials and Gen X probably have a lot in common. It's that generation of babies that can take iPhone pictures and Skype eachother that's messed up.

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

i am nominally a millenial, i guess

honest question: generally speaking, do millenial gays even have the experience of cruising physical spaces, or only virtual ones

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

i do but i am by no means typical, if this list is any indication

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

Cruising = FB friend requests off of one chance meeting, if that

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:52 (twelve years ago)

they have their heads in their "devices" in a packed bar, often

playwright Greg Marlowe, secretly in love with Mary (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

i prefer CyberTeen, thx

Rothko's Chicken and Waffles (donna rouge), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 18:55 (twelve years ago)

i haven't really done any trolling for dick online since the early 2000s and it was still location-based chat rooms at that point

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

I grew in an era of nihilism like gangster rap and Kurt Cobain and people killing themselves and mental illness and drug addiction.

catholic the-rapture guy talking about his gen-x experience. that sounds v familiar and imo this is why it is difficult to relate to millennial gays. they seem so cheerful, shiny, all surface and it works.

man. pero man. man man man (wolves lacan), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)

b-b-but there were cheerful shiny all-surface people in the grunge era, and there are alienated bummed out slacker kids now.

crüt, Thursday, 11 July 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

honest question: generally speaking, do millenial gays even have the experience of cruising physical spaces, or only virtual ones

I'm Gen X and I came out in '99 and was on AOL chat rooms practically the next day. A relief!

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 July 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

Where are the dicks and butts on this list. Are Millennials not into those things

if I'm squaring this with the actual millenial gays I know, it's missing: Golden Girls, Le1f, MikeQ, beards, queer theory, trap and kombucha

so otm, like I am remembering this one time I was hanging out w a mutual friend of ours (m1ke f) and we bought kombucha and talked abt queer theory and Golden Girls in an alley while we drank it.

shohreh aja/danteloo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 11 July 2013 02:41 (twelve years ago)

qiqi, i didn't really meet that many guys! and while i did try going to gay bars and did my share of IRL cruising when I was single, i've also been in an exclusive monogamous relationship for nigh on 6 years now

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 11 July 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

do millennial gays like monogamy?

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 11 July 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)

i'm cool with it

Rothko's Chicken and Waffles (donna rouge), Thursday, 11 July 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

the evening dj there (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 July 2013 13:59 (twelve years ago)

insert generalization about how the flattening of the web and the ease of access to culture / information / community

Initially read this as "the flattering of the web..." which I think makes just as much sense.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Thursday, 11 July 2013 14:40 (twelve years ago)

so this is the #2 result on google for "things millenial gays love" lol

Tamar Bibimbraxton (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 19 July 2013 15:55 (twelve years ago)

Apparently I was the only one who gave it any referral traffic. Sorry about that.

Yes, but hardly the most millennial-defining.
