My parents just went and loved it. They woke up one morning to elephants sticking their trunks into the tree-house.

I went on my gap year - far too long ago to recall many specifics, but I remember loving Zanzibar.

climbed the mountain and spent a lot of time in roof top bars. we went for a quickie day safari which was cool. also went to zanzibar which is amazing, we accidentally went during ramadan so we ate exclusively at this chinese place during the day and checked out some local spots at night (freddy mercury's bar was cool, there were a bunch of local kids playing soccer on the beach next to it). there was a big outside market thing set up kind of near stone town on the ferry side where everybody went as soon as the sun set. we went to this random beach on the northwest side of the island (name escapes me) that was 100% deserted except for me and my three buddies and periodic locals walking to their boats or kids asking for money or to have their picture taken. one dark spot was the drunk/high muslim guy who stumbled across us on the beach and got angry when we tried to talk simple swahili to him. (not because we were bad at it but because he didn't like how we were saying hello.)
hotels are cheap and plentiful. food is good too, though i had to be careful how i ate due to existing issues. spent most of my time in arusha/zanzibar or on the mountain, but that's a whole other thing.
