Seriously. Park Row is mostly empty stores right now. What's left of the brick and mortar is holed up in the building on the corner of Broadway.

There used to be a balding middle-aged guy behind a little table by the exit, who would receive the merchandise up in boxes up from the basement on a conveyor belt. He would check your receipt against the box, have you sign, and then maybe tie it up with some twine and a plastic handle. Dude was no-nonsense.

the way an employee explained it to me, mgmt felt they could make more money renting all those other buildings, in expectation of all the street traffic that will ensue upon the opening of the wtc. also that sales of recorded music are way down and the trend is expected to hasten. it is a bummer. the last of the big box music stores squished into a much smaller box. end of a era.

really is the last place in New York where you can buy, like, Ashley Monroe vinyl
― Does the RS Tsarnaev Cover Offend You, Yeah? (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 20 July 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)
Still some vinyl, yeah.
xp) Definitely. Can't begin to count how many hours I spent in there over the decades. Haven't been down there too much recently. Sometimes I went to the recently added musical instruments store which was my destination the other day. An employee told me they were concentrating on the mail order business.
Also, forgot I already had a J & R thread. Plastic J&R Music World Tote Bags: C/D?

i'm too attached to the past but every time something likes this goes i am a little closer to leaving nyc...it's all fucking luxury condos, chains, and slack jawed tourists
― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)
oh no, is it all gone?i was finding good stuff in their dollar records for a while. i mean, good comparatively. for a dollar. late waylon jennings records, eighties cumbia.
― i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
Not all gone. There seems to be a lot of vinyl in the corner refuge.
― Orpheus in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)
they've moved everything from all their stores into one building on the corner of the block. i think records/cds have two of the floors. there's still a bunch of new vinyl, and some cutout stuff, but nothing like the acres of dollar records they had before. overall much less floor space devoted to music.
― Thus Sang Freud, Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)
But if you need to buy a fan to beat the heat you will probably find a few there.
― Orpheus in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 July 2013 17:48 (twelve years ago)
I have to admit I've neglected them. Bought my korg nanokey there and a camera once, but Beards & Hats is close to my work so I go there more.

The interior of B&H seems clinical and harsh for some reason. No match for the old brown / yellow feel of J&R.
― More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Saturday, 20 July 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)
J&R a much more laid back vibe.

How I miss deep inventory classical sections. After I moved here in 2003, between the Lincoln center Tower and the Chelsea Academy Records I was a pig in shit.

They're just renovated
― calstars, Thursday, 10 April 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)
Renovating
Redd, did they liquidate the DVD store, or did we just get no opportunity to sack it?
― images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 April 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)
End of an era. Had a summer job in '94 working in an office building right over J&R. Used to go in there almost every day on my lunch break to browse CDs and stuff.
― o. nate, Thursday, 10 April 2014 18:20 (eleven years ago)
Didn't notice what happened to the DVD store inventory, just that the store was gone one day.
Renovating? What are they renovating to reopen as? Coffee shop version of Hard Rock Cafe?
― tl;dr5-49 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 April 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)
it's unclear. it might be the typical "we're going out of business, but HEY we're not REALLY going out of business" pep talk. if they come back i doubt they will have much acreage left for physical media.
― espring (amateurist), Thursday, 10 April 2014 23:41 (eleven years ago)
if they own the building my guess is that it'll become some kind of higher-end shopping mall and they'll make money on rent.
i bought my first separate-components stereo system at J&R IIRC
― espring (amateurist), Thursday, 10 April 2014 23:42 (eleven years ago)
I bought a lot of that kind of stuff there too. Wait, when did you ever live in NYC?
― tl;dr5-49 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 April 2014 23:43 (eleven years ago)
