Think this might be my favourite post on ilx.

When the royal baby was born I had this sudden realisation that he was probably going outlive me (what with me being nearly 28 yrs older than him and all) and it really bummed me out, I don't think I've ever been aware that someone famous would probably outlive me before. I had a vision of myself in a hospital bed as an old man watching a news report about him opening parliament or something and now I feel sad every time I hear about him because I know I'll probably be hearing about him for the rest of my life.

I used to think the monarchy wouldn't survive Charles' reign as king, and I still think he'll be incompetent and unpopular, but I don't think I'll see the end of the monarchy in my lifetime. Even if he fucks up massively I can only see it leading to pressure for him to abdicate in favour of William rather than abolition.
