Hair dye advice

Okay. I got really bored and did a silly thing. I dyed my hair. Now, I do this every time I get bored, I'm sort of like a low rent Madonna with the hair do changes this year. However, it kind of came out, um, unlike what I expected (ie the color on the box is distinctly "light reddish brown", color on my head is rather gothy). It doesn't look bad, it's just I was going to go back to dark red far more gradually than this, and it's just not going to do for this moment. It's supposedly a "semi-permanent" ie washes out in "24 washes" dye, but really I think that's all bollocks with red. So can you lot give me some advice? How do you lighten it out a bit? I actually washed my hair with Palmolive, which worked in the past but didn't work with this apparently evil stuff. I have bought a package of my regular dye, which I should've used in the first place, but I'm afraid to use it - how long do I have to wait before I dye my hair again? Will it caue a bad reaction to put a permanent color over semi-permanent?

Yes, I'm too lazy to get off line and call Clairol.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've found that Clairol's Herbal Essences Clarifying/Residue Removal Shampoo takes out more colour per wash than any other shampoo I've tried.

Mascara, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now, just remember the worst thing you can do is the polka. Red hair dye is noxious stuff, but I know how addictive it can be. My best advice is to see a really good hairdresser though, if you want it lightened because lightening is trickier than darkening. I had red hair that I inflicted on myself and when I was sick of it I went to a very lovely hairdresser and she turned me back into a blonde. but if you cant be bothered paying a squillion dollars, I dont see any reason why you cant put a permanent colour over a semi permanent one.

rainy, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there is a manner of cheap bleach which removes colour first then burns hair blonde. i've used it a good seven times and i'm still not bald so it's worth a shot. can't remember the brand, alas.

matthew james, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't you read Cosmopolitan, Ally? I'm sure there's some good advice in there.

Momus, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Be stylish and chic in this fall's 'must have' accessory - the oversized hat.

But seriously, I seem to recall that they always advise waiting at least a few days before a re-colour, as there can be unexpected chemical reactions between the two. If you're not careful, your hair could end up PUCE. I'm sure there must also be some kind of 'Clairol Emergency' website in addition to the hotline...

Kim, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Momus, you are seriously the most irritatingly smug person imaginable. I don't know how you've gotten so far in life without someone shooting you already.

Anyhow, it's really not as bad as I made it out to be, it's just that I got severely annoyed that "light red" turned pretty damned gothic looking. I'm just going to keep using harsh-ish shampoos for the next couple days and then say around wednesday put my normal color back in. Sodium lauryl sulfate, gotta love it.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David is dying my hair french whore red tomorrow.

anthony, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have to at this point note that some of Momus' comments in Dave Cavanagh's book on Creation are screamingly funny. So for that reason alone you have to spare him the executioner. Though if you want to pull a Valerie Solaris (is that her name?) on him, I'd be amused.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually she was called Valerie Sol-Anus, because she thought the sun shone out of her own anus.

Momus, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, your hair dye days are long behind you.

suzy, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, now I wear a Warhol peroxide wig instead. And a Warhol colostomy bag just under my Sol-Anus.

Momus, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We asked for dye advice not bad wigs made to make bourgoise court artits. look ecccentric.

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love how my hair dye advice thread becomes "have a go at Momus" when I say I no longer need the advice.

Ally, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best way to lighten hair a bit , without fucking it up is this: Go to a hir supply store and buy some powder bleach or if you can't manage that get a streaking kit with powder bleach from the drugstore (more expensive) add equal parts water and a shampoo/conditioner blend. Mix thoroughly until it has a creamy consistency, Apply EVENLY and QUICKLY (if you need help get it) Emulsify like you are applying shampoo (not to hard) keep a mirror handy and when you see it lighten a bit remove. repeat as neccesary (once or twice should do it) By swapping the water/shampoo/cond mix for the peroxide it slows down and weakens the overall bleaching process and gives you more room for error. If this scares you for the love of god, go see a pro.

Scott, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The french whore red was more of a cotton candy pink. I have pink hair !!!

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Graham, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six months pass...
I decided to use a semi permanent hair dye such as movida but the dye is always permanent i shouldn't bother using it. The only way i have found to remove this dye is by using the wella on off colour remover it works for a lot of semi permanent dyes and as yet i haven't found one that it doesn't remove. I also use a shampoo by tigi that is a clarifying one it removes quite a bit of colour or the loreal outrageous shampoo too shift colur but it's very drying so you need a good conditioner with it. worthington trevor sorbie or boots leave in conditoner as well as a spray in conditioner helped mine. then used a product called gloss drops to seal in shine. i find that nataea doesn't work so well it left my roots patchy as well as feria most of the dyes where you have to add a fruit complex don't take to well on dark hair types. if you want to go blonde the best bleach to use is platin eclait but it's hard to get hold of. goodluck

mitsukai, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What the hell was this person Googling?

suzy, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

never use sun in spary as it makes ur hair snap especially on dark hair. I found that jerome russel didn't work there is another product called loreal super blue> if you decide to dye over already coloured hair it's best to leave it a few days if ur head hurts after the dying i tend to pour cold milk over it. make sure the dye you use is low in amonia and low in peroxide as if u colour over already dyed hair the peroxide in the dye will send it red or even orange. there are a lot of shampoos you can use i use to use a ligtening toner but i can't ge thold of it anymore so clairol is for me.

I just dyed my hair a permanent med. copper brown to cover up a to light strawberry blond done at the salon 4 weeks ago.( black roots and stawberry blood,) no thanks back to my natural color... well not the color on the box. well I called the Lorial 1888 number and was told a way to remove 50% of the color naturally and no frizzed out hair.Take Dry hair dandref shampoo and let sit 20min rince well take deep conditioner rap in plastic heat till toastie will blow srier let sit 20min rince well repeat 4 times in next 2 days. THe service said I would be amazed at how much dye came outand I would get a truer color to the box . My hair was a really dark blackis red , gross ..tha color is quite changed..try it

, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got this super rad pink hair dye at Hot Topic. It was called cupcake pink and it did a really good job. It was Special Effects brand. they have a lot of other colors too.

MY HAIR IS HORRIBLE! It is usually dark brown, but I want to go RED. Can anyone recommend a good pre-lightener type thing, brand names and such? I am aph34r3d of going GREEN!!!

Sarah, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New answers new answers (before I go to Superdrug)!!

Sarah, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SUN-IN IS MY NU-GOD

Alan T, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But my hair is a LOT darker than your natural colour Alan, I don't think it would work very well, also upthread someone said not to use Sun-In...

Sarah, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, if your hair is dark brown, it is really dark, dark red. There is no such thing as brown, in reality. So instead of lightening and then dyeing it, you would lighten it, either naturally or unnaturally. But if you want it fake candy red or something, I'd wait until you got it light enough. But don't take my advice : see a colorist. I think you have to do it in steps. I know someone who went from black to red, but she basically had to dye the roots red and wait for the rest to grow out long enough so that she could cut them off.

Dean Air, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really don't think I could afford to see a colourist! I don't want my hair looking totally fake either, not when I am in the throes of job applications anyway :)

Sarah, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Starry must go GREEN!

Tim, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Update: pre-lightener + uneven coverage + red = ORANGE on top, dark underneath! It looks cool and punxx0r however not particularly good for job interview so am off to thee Body Shoppe to look at their NATURAL hair dyes and ask if they will dye my hair darker WITHOUT turning it green!!!

Sarah, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have you tryed mixing 1 tablespoon of washing up liquid and 1 table spoon of white vinegar with 3 cups of warm water and using it as a shampoo? i leave mine on for a coupe of minutes to get the really stubborn bits out

AJ, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops! I've just turned 23 and my friends thought it would be an excellent idea to try and put some red highlights into my long brown hair. IT LOOKS AWFUL! I'm dubious about putting another dye into my hair. Any ideas on how to best strip off the colour? When I said the hightlights are red, I mean RED! I spent last night with anti- dandruff shampoo in my hair as I've heard this works and it has stripped a bit of the colour out.

Danny, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok just looked up pink hair dye on google.com got this instead wats wrong with dark red? the gothic look is defintly the best way to go apart from pink of course!

blue dye over a cheep bleach makes a really nice shade of green.

ellie, Saturday, 10 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
ok, ive dyed my hair dark brown, except its gone black. can i redye it mid brown? if not, how long do i have to wait? i think the dye i used was permanent (how long will this last for? surely they're not really permanent, otherwise people would never buy anymore, and when i dyed it reddy brown it didnt seem to last that long, although i cant remember)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Er this could depend - black dye on my naturally dark brown hair washes out, even if it's permanent! Put yr hair under some water and see if the water changes colour at all, if so, wash it several times and the colour should fade pretty quickly.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

could i put some brown on top of it now though? if its not rinsing out?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, a lighter dye on top of a darker one won't make much difference I should imagine, especially if it's not rinsing out...

And anyway, I'm sure black hair would suit you very well (ie you will look like a GOTH hahaha++).

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i spent 5 years growning out black hair dye (although i'm guessing your hair is probably shorter than mine, gareth). To get it back to lighter brown you'll have to get the colour stripped out with bleach - black hair dye doesn't fade. I'd advise getting a hairdresser to do it unless you want orangey beige hair

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Black hair dye fades if you're me!!!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so gareth, simply revert to Sarah and all will be well.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried this l'oreal Super Blonde dye....now I look like an albino!!!
I'm scared to put anything else on it! How can I fix this?

Kellie DeForest, Sunday, 10 November 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Did it turn your eyes pink too?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I think if you got the bleach in your eyes, their resulting colour would be the least of your troubles.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

You HAVE to put something else on top of it, lighteners don't fade out.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 11 November 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

With the Black Hair dye problem: putting a *permanant* lighter brown dye over the top will make it lighter. Permanant dyes contain peroxide and ammonia - what they allow the dye to do is to (not quite literally) suck the colour out of the hair shaft and then inject their own in instead. Notice on the hair dye box there may be a table that shows what colour black hair will go if dyed with the dye. It will be brown.

Semi-permanent dyes put a coating over the top of the hair shaft. Therefore brown hair + brown dye = darker brown hair, maybe even blackish. Black + brown = black, so this isn't going to help you.

Give the colour you've used a few days of washing as it might fade.

The reason people keep on buying permanant dyes is because they have to dye their roots every 4 to 6 weeks so as to not look grungy. Also, any vibrant colours do fade a bit and need to be refreshed.

With the L'oreal Superblonde (my favourite!): you need to put a blonde colour in now that you've done the bleaching. Champagne blonde is often nice, not too brassy and not to ashy. Ash blondes can look a bit grubby if your hair isn't really shiny - and it probably won't be after the Superblonde. You can use either a permanent or semi-permanent dye.

If you use a permanent, you will get a very accurate colour (the little swatches that are often displayed with the hair dyes are done on pure white, if your hair is platinum then the swatches will give you a very good indication of what the final colour will be). Make sure you give your hair some serious conditioning after this and buy an expensive *protein* shampoo and conditioner from the hair-dressers.

A semi-permanent will coat and condition your hair, making it more shiny and nice. You hair will be very porous though, so be very careful with what shade you choose. If you put ash in your hair will probably go grey.

Choose a subtle blonde colour and don't leave it in for the full amount of time. This is the one time when a strand test really should be done. If left in for too long golden blondes could give you orange hair, Ash blondes could give you grey hair, Medium blondes coule give you green hair, Champagnes could give you pinkish hair.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

ok I have kept my hair dyed for several years now and would like to get back to normal color. My true hair color is a dark redish blonde and have kept dyed a medium blond. Is there any product that will restore hair to normal color? I have permanant color on it no frosts though (i hear there is a difference when removing) any ideas on what to use to get the hair color off my hair? dont think i can wait years for it to grow out.

becky1970, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

milo - Loreal Feria is pretty strong and out there in its intensity of colours. They have a really nice bright red, a deep red, and a purple. They dont do things like green and blue though. And watch their reds and blacks, as they stain porcelein VERY badly, I have Feria stains I can't get off the bath and thats never happened with any other dye (Ive seriously even tried a peroxide paste left for 48 hours and it did nothing!).

I really want to dye my hair blonde but everyone seems to dye their hair blonde.I dont want to be a total individual but is blonde too common?

Claire Kavanagh, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Blonde is both common and vulgar. And slutty. And smelly. And sticky wet. Which is why we love it.

Skottie, Thursday, 15 April 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Trayce, I'll give them a shot. I don't think the dye could do much more damage to my sink and counter.

Whats wrong with this thing?

Claire113 (Claire Kavanagh), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking. If we started up a new message board on ilxor called Hair Dye Advice would it take long to get to above this thread on the google search? It would point hair dye advice seekers to somewhere they wouldn't get flippant responses (which amuse some of us but aren't what they want to read) and would stop random googlers starting yet more hair dye threads ile - there have been quite a few of them lately.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Claire Kavanagh (Claire Kavanagh), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Note that I'm just this weirdo from a distant country, and while I may think black with pink streaks is cool, you shouldn't give any more weight to my words than you'd give to, say, those of Phoebe from "Friends".

It's true, go for the shaving it option.. You'll look cool and hard and all your friends will fear and secretly envy you, plus you'll score with teenage boys who are actually gay but not ready to admit it yet.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 16 April 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I shaved my head once. I scored with nobody.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Friday, 16 April 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, shaving your head definitely works with certain feminine/feminist boys who want a strong and masculine woman to tell them what to do. I should know, because I'm such a boy myself. The question is, are we what you're looking for.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 16 April 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Nadia, get out most of the colour by washing your hair with washing up liquid a few times(not all at once)and of course condition your hair thoroughly each time. Then,I suppose the best thing you can do is dye it again.

Claire Kavanagh (Claire Kavanagh), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

tuomas, you are a strange boy indeed.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Claire Kavanagh (Claire Kavanagh), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I want a strong and feminine woman to tell me what to do, but I'm not sure what this has to do with shaving your head.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 17 April 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I was making generalisations there. See, it goes like this: a bald woman = a masculine woman = a strong woman. Obviously that's not always true, but it's the stereotypical image. How a strong and feminine woman would look like, I'm not sure. Perhaps a leather-clad goth dominatrix would fit the description.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 April 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

how about that bemuscled, blouse-clad, massive forearmed form of femininity, so favoured by soviet-realism. and nazi propaganda. doe-eyed with hoe to hand.

non-u, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I was interested in coloring my hair either a light honey brown or a copper red. Being an African American, my hair is naturally very dark in color and appears to be black. Although I do not want to bleach my hair with the risk of damaging it, I want it to be lighten. Any suggestions? Thanx I was also want some sort of depth to my hair, do I have to get highlights as well?

aarica kelley, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Aarica, I'm a professional colorist. As long as your hair is virgin, highlights can be applied with single process color instead of bleach. I would suggest to do the highlights instead of color due to the high maintenance factor.

Skottie, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't "appears to be black" mean BLACK?!!! My name is Rufus Manglenot but it is pronounced Sade! WTF? How can you sheep be so blind? EVERYONE IS MAKING FUN OF YOU AND YOU DON"T SEE IT AT ALL!Vote for Bush! Osama is in your kitchen! Run! Run!

Pot (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...

No, your hair is not ruined when it is 'dyed black'. There are easy ways to lighten the color AT HOME if it is too heavy. Mine is dark brown, but appears to be black in pictures, I guess. Of course, lighting and and other elements of photography are factors.

I love how this thread is so screamingly popular. I had no idea that bad hair color was an issue of national concern.

zombie vermin go home (dymaxia), Thursday, 12 May 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

What colour?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

Kind of dark brown with a very slight hint of red. Kind of like Davina's. She was looking all shiny and lovely on telly last night and it inspired me. I hate to say it, but it's the brand she advertises. Alhtough obviously she gets hers done somewhere posh, so I'm kidding myself.

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

She looks like a witch in that picture.

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

While rinsing it out it occurred to me that you might have no idea who Davina is - she presents Big Brother in the UK. Sorry if you already knew that.

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

I remember Davina from her MTV days... I always thought she was kinda hot, because she didn't look like a model, unlike some other MTV hosts.

I haven't dyed my hair in ages, for the simple reason that I've kept it very short for almost four years now. But when it was longer, I had it dyed about the same colour as in that pic - I thought it looked good.

Isn't yr hair already that colour, madchen? How's it looking now?

I never dyed my hair when I had the chance. I'm sort of sad about that.

It was, but with inch-long blonde roots. Something had to be done. You could maybe get the dyed effect by wearing a swim cap.
