i was going to break out types of onion but i was wary of diluting the onion vote. my dad swears by spanish onion. i would use any onion on hand but by preference maybe red.

Many of these would be good options for me, but the baseline is mayo. An ideal sandwich IMO would also include tomato, some kind of salad green (arugula or spinach would be best), along with sliced onion, pickles and alfalfa sprouts. A few slices of avocado would not go amiss. Bread should be some kind of fresh multigrain.

I am N American but love cheddar cheese sandwiches and was super excited to see cheddar cheese and pickle sandwiches at Pret when I went to London that one time, so I'm voting for relish because I think that's the closest to,what I had. If we were talking toasted cheese, I'd say Marmite.

people who haven't spent a lot of time in England don't really get what this sandwich is about I think. I partly get it but I feel like the M&S version I'm used to from gas stations while traveling is, like, the version you only like because you've had decent versions of it at home throughout your life. still, enough of them and you end up making yourself non-grilled cheese-and-one-add'l sandwiches (I went with red onion after reading this thread; it was delicious) for yourself at home.

feel like i coulda closed a door ahead of time here by addressing this in op but regular cheese sandwich vs grilled cheese vs toastie, these are all different things with their individual merits. don't be fooled by the superficial similarity.

i eat a fair amount of grilled cheeses. sometimes it is the only veggie option here (new england) in e.g. seafood restaurant. i like 'em. maybe it's how i wuz raised, but i would take a reg cheese sandwich or toastie over them in a heartbeat. that's another poll 4 another time.

i like this kind of cheese sandwich and i also like grilled or toasted ones but they are quite different. i mostly eat these with little sliced sweet tomatoes (grape or heirloom) but i also like them plain or with vegemite or with slices of granny smith apple (apple is best on very fresh white bread or baguette). and i always butter the bread.

My preference is; grated mature cheddar cheese + grated hard-boiled egg + small amount of mayo on granary. On the poll I'd go for Branston, I'd usually add lettuce, tomato + cucumber.

I think as long as the single thing with the most volume is cheese, it is a cheese sandwich even if the combined volume of other ingredients exceeds that of the cheese.

I was thinking of the USA type of ingredient-salad sandwich, like tuna salad or chicken salad or egg salad, which is the ingredient plus mayo or similar binding agent plus seasoning/aromatics. Although I guess cheese salad wold just be pimento cheese, which don't knock it until you've tried it.

I looked for and went for plain butter, which is the truth, almost always. Didn't notice 'crisps' in my haste to vote. I have always loved Walkers Smokey Bacon in a cheese sandwich. A childish comfort food,but I rarely indulge now. It is unhealthy and shameful. I am a grown man!

Grate some mature cheddar cheese, grate a hard-boiled egg on top. Mix them up a bit. I quite often add a small amount rapeseed mayo to bind, and finely chopped chives. Use as sandwich filling. Nice.
