I asked the aforementioned Ms. Rockermann for information re: a wee li'l trip I was planning to Providence (which, alas, never happened) - she told me about some nice places and such, but A) became very nostalgic and B) wanted to make sure I didn't walk around alone. A) isn't of immediate concern, but B) sure as hell might.
Alas, Fort Thunder, I knew ye well. You might want to check out AS220.

if you hang out in the bar of the biltmore hotel you might get to know my aunt
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 25 May 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
my prom was in the biltmore. only the 'm' was blinked out, so all the photos of me in a prom outfit advertise the BILTMOE
― remy bean, Friday, 25 May 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

I would say that Providence RULES, but our submarine recently sank, so I'm not sure of our exact status any more.

I miss Providence. sometimes I think about moving back.
― horseshoe, Saturday, 26 May 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
I go to Providence for the film festival, August 5 - 10. I have a few leads from Craigslist for accommodation that is walkable to downtown (here are the locations I need to be walkable). Anyone know great places to stay that I won't find on Craigslist? Any particular areas I should be looking at, assuming I can't find somewhere in downtown itself? Presumably the area around Brown/RISD?
― caek, Sunday, 15 June 2008 14:47 (sixteen years ago)
?
― caek, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago)
Providence is a very very walkable city, for the most part -- all of those locations are on the bottom of college hill & downcity area, it would take 15 minutes tops to get between any two of those locations
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:43 (sixteen years ago)
if you want to stay relatively close, you'd probably want to look into College Hill area -- it's where Brown & RISD are, yeah, so there are lots of walkable food options right around there. Maybe the West Side --Broadway / Atwells / Westminster corridor -- would work, too?
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:47 (sixteen years ago)
caek it might be worth getting touch with the brown halls of residence people - they might do you a deal on an empty dorm room
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:49 (sixteen years ago)
and if worse comes to worse you could sleep in roger williams park, as i have done :/
it was a low point for me, though
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago)
Downcity is pretty nice itself but I've never stayed down there, don't have any idea what your budget is but I think accommodations -- Hilton, Sheraton, Biltmore, Hotel Providence, Renaissaince -- are generally on the higher end
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:50 (sixteen years ago)
but there's always the sportsman's inn :(
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:51 (sixteen years ago)
15 minutes tops to get between any two of those locations
uh, columbus theatre would be the exception to this
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago)
Tracer, do you mean Roger Williams Park where the Zoo is, or the Roger Williams National Memorial at Canal Street close to downtown? Because I think it's legal to sleep overnight in the latter
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 13:57 (sixteen years ago)
no i actually mean the tiny prospect park on college hill, which i always wrongly call roger williams park (because there is a giant statue of roger williams doing a kind of zz top move with his hand there)

caek what are the craigslist accomodations you've found? you may be able to sublet a vacant room for a week in some student apartment if you make some well-placed inquiries
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 14:59 (sixteen years ago)
lots of brown/risd away for the summer, but the baby browns (hs summer program) will be occupying a lot of the university housing at that time
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:01 (sixteen years ago)
if you end up looking in neighborhoods on the east side you probably want to stay around the wickenden street, thayer street, or wayland square areas
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
on the other side of downtown, also it's a little farther out and easier to travel if you have a car, but there's some student-focused housing in the smith hill / douglas ave area near providence college
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 15:11 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks elmo and Tracer! Local places to eat are important. We'd like to sublet with a kitchen, but doubtless we'll be too busy to do this most days.
This place is booked during the festival, but would have been perfect accommodations, assuming the location is OK: http://providence.craigslist.org/sub/718275856.html. That's about our budget too. $50-80 per day.
This place is apparently right next to the Biltmore, but the guy doesn't have photos: http://providence.craigslist.org/sub/714649862.html
The loft here is available and looks awesome, but it's the other side of I95. Can you walk to downtown without getting killed? http://www.gothicguesthouse.com/
Thanks for the Brown link gabbneb, will chase that up.

I laughed.
oh wait, that Brown link is local hotels. anyone know where I need to go to investigate dorm rooms?

thanks!
― caek, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago)
can't check the CL listings right now but the Gothic Guesthouse thing looks ok, but a little far -- like i said, Providence is very walkable if you have the time but I wouldn't encourage ppl to walk around Broad Street at night, tbh
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:04 (sixteen years ago)
plus i can't think of many good places to eat in the elmwood neighborhood either
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)
the Brown link includes a link to the on-campus hotel, which is in a dorm.
― gabbneb, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
there's also this b&b, adjacent to campus, which is $115/nt - http://www.cadyhouse.com/rates.html
― gabbneb, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
i guess you want to spend below hotel room cost. given that brown runs its own hotel, i'd be sort of skeptical that you can find other short-term dorm accommodation.
― gabbneb, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago)
thanks guys. yes, I definitely need to keep it cheap. the price flights to the US in August = serious wtf.
― caek, Monday, 16 June 2008 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
caek, i will peep those CL listings and keep my eyes open, not sure if i'll find anything on chance but we'll see
also, let me know if you want some clues as to where u should eat & drink
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 16 June 2008 21:24 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks elmo. There's a chance this is all going to fall through (those flights really are pretty fucking ouch), but I will doubtless be looking for tips if it doesn't.
― caek, Monday, 16 June 2008 22:28 (sixteen years ago)
(probably best not to waste your time with food and drink recommendations until I know I'm definitely coming and where I'm going to stay)

Providence, front line against terror
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
With a $5.6 million grant, the department is developing a sophisticated radio system so police, fire and other emergency responders throughout the region can communicate with one another.
This stuff is where terror money should be spent if you have to spend it.

― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)
is there an alt-weekly type publication in Providence these days?
