At which points throughout history has skateboarding been cool in YOUR neighbourhood?

There seems to be no geographical consistency to this.

archel's dates are pretty much right for me too, although i'd probably extend it into 1994-ish, and i also remember it being fairly popular in the early 80s although my memory is too fuzzy to say for sure.

Probably 1988ish too - we all had skateboards until they got destroyed by our ROLLICKING WAYS.

we lived on a big hill, so we would lay down on our skateboards and ride them in the style of popular olympic sporting event THE LUGE. we then used our feet to stop us before crashing. i had many a pair of chunk taylors with holes burned into the backs of the soles from trying to stop myself @ 60 mph of squealing rubber on blacktop action!!

"chunk taylor" sounds like a 60s frat rock band leader.

I burned the soles out of my Keds Chuck-Taylor-rip-off shoes on the day that my mom bought them for me. I got in trouble. My dad tried to rebuild the heel with rubber cement, which looked dumb, and then I had to wear them anyways. But not for long.

skateboarding was cool before snowboarding, nu-metal, rollerblading and Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

when I was in junior high (mid-90's) you were either a skater a jock or a nerd. my friends determined that i was 1/3 each. i never skated, but i appreciated the public mischief aspects of it, and my friends were soo cool in their slouched, stoner poses.

skateboarding is no longer associated with the reclamation of (sub)urban space, (thanx to skate parks, maybe). now its a sport, and sports are dumb.

1972/3. That was the first 'urban surfing' type craze that happened, in north London at least. My best friend (hi Colin and thanks for introdcuing me to dub) at the time was an expat from west coast USA and crazy for it.

one year passes...
80' 90's and now. but now high speed longboarding is the urban and sub-urban guerilla sport that street skating used to be!!!!! Go kick flip while I take over a mountain road standing up at 60 mph.

It was "popular" when my brother skated in the late 90's. I actually filmed a video documentary (not a skate video) about his skating obsesssion.
