Nicholas Lyndhurst POLL: Which of these post-OF&H Nicholas Lyndhurst vehicles is the worst?

I think an argument can be made that GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART is objectively the ‘worst’, but I liked it a lot when I was a kid, and it was pretty much the only contemporary UK TV show that was sort of sci-fi/fantasy apart from CRIME TRAVELLER, I still have some residual affection for it.

When I watch it back now it’s bizarre to me how blatant a wish fulfilment fantasy/daydream the basic concept is- a sitcom about this guy who gets to go back in time as and when he pleases, pretend to be this mysterious/glamorous spy, take credit for all these pop songs written in the 60s so people thinks he’s some kind of song-writing genius, have an affair with an attractive barmaid.
There’s a whiff of some reactionary politics there as well, the way that his 90s wife is a ball-breaking career woman, like the idea is that he can go back in time and be a ‘real man’?
It was painfully unfunny as well, of course.

If you ever read Richard Herring's blog, he's mildly obsessed with it. How the guy has a portal to go and change history but instead just goes to the first pub he sees and chats up the barmaid.

SWEETHEART seems similar to Ardal O’Hanlon’s MY HERO in some ways- the supporting actor from a much loved/classic sitcom who was great in that role, but then their status demands that they get a follow up show of their own and they can’t really do anything else. And so you end up with these weird shows with awkward, fantastical premises that don’t really work, and mean that the whole program has a strained, uncomfortable tone, but run for years because they have this person in the lead who starred in an iconic classic.

They both have actors from BREAD in them as well, playing eccentric scousers, eccentric scousers as the last desperate resort of the creatively bankrupt comedy writer?

I'd never read Herring's writings about the show, will have to familiarise myself with these when I have a minute.

I wonder if SWEETHEART only got the green light because Lyndhurst liked the concept? It seems a strange idea for a show, can’t imagine it being commissioned with an unknown in the central role, or at least not running for as long as it did.

Rock & Chips is the worst. And I say that as someone who has actually seen the Piglet Files.

much as i love OFAH he comes across as a bit of a pompous arse when i've seen him interviewed. always reminds me of the Victoria Wood behind-the-scenes-at-Acorn-Antiques sketch with the actress playing Mrs Overall coming on like Zsa Zsa Gabor and saying "well we've captured the hearts of the nation.. "

my favourite scene in butterflies is when the mum enters NL's bedroom and he's playing what seems like the entirety of the second side of roxy music 2: it's like sitcom world -- and actually a p great sitcom -- has stepped outside itself into alien goblinworld

i mean it's a couple of the wilder bars of sea breezes (roxy music 1, sorry) but it lasts FOREVER
