A friend and fellow ILE poster has recently come into possession of 40 cats which she is nursing in her Philadelphia home. She is desperate for names for these animals - can you suggest any?

"Weblog", "Durst", "Shrek", "Bridget" and "Zannah" have always struck me as excellent cat names.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pebbles, boris, percy, oubie, tiffy (my cat's name), mig, arnie

jel, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

40 is a lot innit? She ain't gonna be choosy is she?

Josh, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She needs 40 to help comfort the awful pain that comes from loss of celebrity.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Snaggletooth

jel, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mascara, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just choose forty names at random from the stats cock listings. And how exactly *did* she get forty cats, anyway?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it worth me asking Tom E to explain the obscure title? I understand the loose TSE reference, but what's all this 'Today we have' etc?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Arnie, Stallone, John Wayne, Heston

Michael Bourke, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's actually a reference to the poem "Naming Of Parts" by Henry Somebody - about rifle training in WW II - "And today we have naming of parts". I did it for A-Level Prac Crit.

Tom, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr. Tickles.

Bill

Bill, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Budda Boom and Budda Bing. Bonus. Mister Fur. Schwanky.

Kim, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just number them all one through forty. They're cats, what do they care what they're called. I might use the same system if I ever have children (though not all the way up to forty - natch)

jamesmichaelward, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just go for Chairman Miaow No 1, Chairman Miaow No 2, etc. How are you going to remember.

Actually, best idea: call them "CATS!" and train them to work in a pack. It's obviously better with "DOGS!" but you've got to start somewhere.

Greg, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the idea of a collective appellation, and no individual names. But I think the animals would soon develop a political sensitivity to the word 'cats', which they would associate with their enslavement.

Then you could just change it to 'Felines!' and they'd be happy slaving for you again. For a generation or so. Then the kittens would start to grumble that 'Felines' was degrading, and you'd have to find a new term. But at no point would the (ahem) 'cats' openly rebel and try to change their power relationship with you (despite their sharp claws and superior mousing and climbing skills).

The alternative is just to go through TS Eliot's 'Old Possum's'.

Momus, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got the idea from a guy who set his pack of 3 dogs on me then called them off with the command "DOGS! LIE!" (to which they didn't respond in the Baran sense with something like "Woof! There used to be 21 players in a water polo team but they changed the rules to make it fairer on Winston Churchill! Woof!").

That's the least sensible post I've ever made.

Greg, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They should all be named after Ayn Rand characters and Norse gods.

Lyra, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fine. SchwankyI. SchwankyII. SchwankyIII. And so on...

Kim, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Schwankies?

Kim, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sorry to say this, but with that many cats, you'd have to use mnemonic techniques to keep their names straight. So you'd have to start with the physical characteristics of each cat, and then think of a person or thing which the most distinctive characteristic reminds you of. I just hope that one of them doesn't have a Hitler mustache, like mine does.

Forty cats...I can't imagine the smell.

Kerry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A mnemonic device could be a sentence 40 words long, with each cat named after a word. Of course, you'd have to avoid repeating things like to, a, the, etc.

tha chzza, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Name one after each of us.

JM, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was Henry Reed, Tom.

Josh, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You should just give them number names. Like they are clones.

Failing that: Samantha, Miranda, Carrie, Charlotte, Mr. Big, Aidan, Ally, Tom's Beard, Mike Hanle y, Mr. Bigglesworth, Neil, Otto, Falco, Jennifer, Murph, Phil Spector, Katana 600, What?, Fuckface, Hitler, Stewie, Schmoopie, Mr. Jinx, Stanky, Tatiana, Pac Man, Lara Croft, Andrew, Cher, Charo, Becks, Lolita, Heathcliff, The Mad Hatter, Lainie, Billy Bob, Cowboy, Jay, Hootie, and Richie Manic.

Ally, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Poets name is Randell Jarell . One of the great ones

was i wrong again ?

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always though umlaut (the two dots signifying the pronunciation of an oo sound) would make a great cat name. If it was a fat cat.

turner, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Give the cats drugs so they start speaking in tongues. I am sure you will find a word that will be a perfect name for that particular cat.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Some of these are actual cat names used by friends, some not.

Pyewacket. Oscar. Dawson. Pacey. Dexter. Margo. Eve. Tillie. Nicole. Nipsey. Buffy. Giles. Josie. Fang. Molly. Samantha. Tabitha. Endora. Dr. Bombay. Kenny. Jesse Ventura. Hillary. Bijou. Camille. Madchen, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is the Charles Ray an art refernce ? or am i being too much of an ArtPhag.

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, I hit the double. Not Charles Ray, Charles and Ray Eames.

suzy, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't call a cat Fosca. Please. Someone called their cat Fosca? World is mad. Call one of the cats Diffuse Nitrate Pollution and think of me. In fact, call it Starry. Purrr.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fosca = from the deBeauvoir book, not the rinkydink band.

suzy, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was the way you put Fosca and Orlando together. Eeech! Why not dress one in a white suit and pile so much foundation on it that it looks like an extra from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I had a dog I would name it Sythat joke doesn't work for cats.

Pete, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fosca = from the deBeauvoir book, not the rinkydink band.

It is important that this information be carried on its nametag.
