balsamic for salad, rice for cooking

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 00:36 (twelve years ago)

malt or balsamic. Anything else can fuck off.

emil.y, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

It all depends on the application. I can't pick just one.

The most underrated of these is distilled white, tho. Great in salads. Does amazing things when you put garlic and tarragon in it overnight. Cheap enough that you can splash it around the room, water the plants etc.

hah your acv posts from today reminded me i wanted to make this poll

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

Apple cider.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:03 (twelve years ago)

ACV for catching bugs and for beauty purps
Red wine for salads
White for laundry
Balsamic for tomatoes

Really vinegar is a miracle liquid, sent from the gods.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:11 (twelve years ago)

truth

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:12 (twelve years ago)

Balsamic, no doubt about it. Great for caprese, great for cooking. There is none higher.

no fomo (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:40 (twelve years ago)

no rice vinegar?

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:43 (twelve years ago)

balsamic rather overrated imo

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah i'm tired of balsamic. rice is in the poll options if that is what you are asking?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:46 (twelve years ago)

― Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Tuesday, August 20, 2013 7:38 PM (1 hour ago)

^^^ This. I'll probably vote ACV, but I have, like, 10 different kinds of vinegar in the pantry for different applications.

Plain white vinegar is better as a cleaning product than for consumption.

cops on horse (WilliamC), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 01:51 (twelve years ago)

oh i'm sorry i missed it

love rice vinegar as a soup finisher and a light dressing base

balsamic is just so overpowering, and super expensive to boot

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:10 (twelve years ago)

does kombucha count as a vinegar? doesn't win any poll round this house but I like it just the same

Balsamic + strawberries is a nice treat

ship who you wanna ship (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)

wikipedia tells us that there is in fact kombucha vinegar, who knew

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:17 (twelve years ago)

i used to work at a store that sold the really expensive balsamic from modena ($100+ per bottle)

one time the bosses cracked one open for christmas and drizzled some on vanilla ice cream and chopped strawberries

now that was good

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:21 (twelve years ago)

i think it was like 12 year aged

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:22 (twelve years ago)

I agree that balsamic is too strong/notable for all dressings--I prefer red wine vin or, frankly, lemon juice for acid in a salad. But for tomatoes, specifically, there's not much point in substituting another acid for balsamic.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:38 (twelve years ago)

sherry vinegar is also really good in dressings

the late great, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

sherry vinegar is really wonderful. i like it for brightening up vegetables if i'm not in the mood for citrus.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:47 (twelve years ago)

Oh, I forgot about sherry vinegar! Yes.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:51 (twelve years ago)

ugh this is maybe the most difficult poll EVER

I love all of the vinegars! staff of life etc!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 02:58 (twelve years ago)

Pok Pok makes this super good honey drinking vinegar, so nice.

I can't pick just one; it's impossible.

Jaq, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 03:33 (twelve years ago)

This waiter at a local chain restaurant kept saying BASLAMIC and we were all dying from it one time

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I bought a blueberry/blackberry drinking vinegar a couple of years ago and still haven't opened it. I need to try that stuff.

One that I got a few years ago that I was surprised to dislike: Datu Puti coconut vinegar.

cops on horse (WilliamC), Monday, 26 August 2013 00:03 (twelve years ago)

Apple cider used to be my go-to vinegar, but these days I prefer balsamic

Moodles, Monday, 26 August 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)

I have like 8 vinegars in the kitchen and none of them are malt but malt's the answer because malt on fries is life.

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 26 August 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)

what is a "drinking vinegar"?

no fomo (La Lechera), Monday, 26 August 2013 00:22 (twelve years ago)

well people used to drink a glass before bed iirc, I had somebody tell me it was good to treat reflux but that sounded like handed-down nonsense information. I have used some vinegars in cocktails though, just a teaspoon, to nice effect

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 26 August 2013 00:36 (twelve years ago)

It's like a vinegar fruit syrup that you mix with water (or vodka). Was called a "shrub" (maybe still is somewhere). The honey one makes a tart lemonade-ish drink.

apple cider has played a role in every good barbecue sauce i've ever had. I'm down with ACV
