i've been considering getting into civil war history too but it seems so huge and life consuming that i might save it for another time in life. i did work at a civil war mansion this summer getting them arboretum status - the guy who runs the place is a dude my age who only listens to fife and drum music and put notes like this on our coffee

Civil War history is more or less something I grew up in thanks to my dad, v much interested in it as a young man and through to the present. The NYT series Disunion that's been running for a few years now looking over the history of the war from 150 years distance has turned up a slew of excellent articles and is a nice way to get beyond the Ken Burns/Shelby Foote framing. And today's entry is about...Tom Ewing!

"fish chowder" is something I wasn't wild about when I ate meat and that I wouldn't eat now but the words somehow have a mystical connection to my innermost being. like you say "the fish chowder I'm making tonight," and even though I know I'd probably say "not my thing" if decided to eat it, still I reflexively go GIMME SOME GOD DAMN FISH CHOWDER MAN BE QUICK ABOUT IT
